Symphonia is a 2D platformer with beautiful animation and interactive levels. Watch the backgrounds animated as you move from one area to another. I never had any issues running it with Wine and my GeForce GTX 1060 handled the 2D graphics perfectly. This is a short game, but pretty dang fun and free. It requires a controller and my Amazon Xbox basics controller worked perfectly as long as I didn't click anything with the mouse.

I was able to install and run the game with Wine 5.0.2 but upon launching there was no audio in-game. The BIK movies played audio, but not in-game. I still had to install DirectX June 2010 Redistribute for all of the xact, xaudio overrides. It would fail again and again until I manually added all the xaudio2_0 all the way up to xaudio 2_9 and set to (native). Then it installed and now audio works!

Much like GZDoom, use Wine to install GOG Hexen II in a wineprefix, then simply cut-n-paste the game folder anywhere you want. Drop fteqw64 executable in the game folder and run with Terminal. Now you have a plethora of video options, widescreen settings and even realistic water reflections. Trust me, Hexen has never been so beautiful on modern computers!

Hitman Absolution ran perfectly in PlayOnLinux with Wine 5.0.2 on my GeForce GTX 1060. I played through th first three levels and never experienced any graphical issues, control issues or save/load issues. It just ran perfectly! I was also able to crank up the graphics as this title was created back in 2012.

World War Z is one of the rare games that actually works in PlayOnLinux with Epic Games Launcher. I had to do a bit of trial-n-error just to get the Launcher working by adding Media Foundation, Visual C++ 2019 and DXVK, but it actually works. The only issues I had playing this game is a bit of stutter at the begging of each level. I'm sure there is some caching going on there and its annoying, but if you are patient, it eventually begins to run well. I also had to crank down the settings as...

Years ago I tested Crysis 2 with patched versions of Wine. It played fairly well on my older hardware, but there points in the game where it crashed. Eventually I crashed every time in a specific spot in the game. I gave up, but one day it will play through beautifully. Today with Proton and DirectX 10/11 support I found Crysis 2 runs perfectly! No crashing yet, and amazing performance!

Back in 2013 I posted a Betrayer guide in PlayOnLinux using Wine to play it, but there were some graphical bugs. Today Proton handles Betrayer without any issues... well there were some black rocks, but that was about it. Performance was awesome, even during the trees and vegetation blowing around in the wind.

Perfect Vermin is a low poly first person arcade sandbox smasher! Find the alien vermin who imitate office objects like chairs, doors, toilets, etc... then smash them! In Sound Mind demo ran well in Proton at first, but there is a large grocery store area that ended up killing my frame rate down to unplayable. I tried tweaking the game video settings but nothing worked. It is a clever game with spooky dream sequences, but unfortunately my video card couldn't handle the large areas.

Ghostrunner demo runs in Proton perfectly on my GeForce GTX 1060. After the game downloaded there was an initial directx installation that took a few minutes, but when it was done I could play without any problems. After I removed the game and re-downloaded, it wouldn't launch. So I had to delete the wineprefix in the compadata folder. Interesting that it doesn't have the same name as the steapowered.com path. Make sure to delete: 1249200

Honestly, this is not my type of game. I love parkour games like Mirror's Edge, but in the demo a single shot from a soldier will end your life, then return you...

You will be thoroughly immersed into the beautifully detailed island environments. Some actually almost look real. Discover cliff-sides and corporate offices with zombies and soldiers in your way. I haven't seen graphics this epic in a long time. I found myself admiring the natural stone walls in a cave, the small puddles on the ground and edges of walls reflecting light. Its pretty amazing!

I never did a guide for Allied Assault because I was never able to run it in Wine until now. This game was developed in 2002 and though the graphics are hard on the eyes, its a pretty fun war game with a lot of action. It displays features and scenarios before its time. The Call of Duty series was inspired by Allied Assault.

The key to playing Allied Assault in Wine is adding the following command for Nvidia video cards:
export __GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700

In PlayOnLinux you have to paste this in the Miscellanous Tab area at the bottom...

9 Monkeys of Shaolin is a story-driven side-scrolling kung fu beat-em up game with beautiful low poly graphics. The Prologue is currently available for free on Steam and runs perfectly in Proton on my GeForce GTX 1060. Made in Unreal Engine, there didn't need to be any workaround or overrides necessary. I did install Media Foundation just to be safe as its very common for Unreal game to utilize it for videos and cut-scenes. There is even a co-op feature over local network or split-screen available.

In The Surge you awaken in the ruins of a huge corporation with an exoskeleton suite as your advantage. Fight rogue robots and augmented zombies as you learn what happened to the CREO corporation. This is a Dark Souls-ish combat game with the ability to target specific areas of the enemies unarmored body parts. Use combos and dodges to slay clever minions who have similar attacks as yourself.

PlayOnLinux was able to handle The Surge with Wine 5.0 64-bit and DXVK on my GeForce GTX 1060. Loading, saving and keyboard/mouse controls worked without issues as you can see in the video. I warn you, this game is pretty unforgiving as all the enemies re-spawn even when you return to a previous area. There are only checkpoints which save your progress, so you may find yourself dying an clearing out the same areas over and over.

Path of Titans is a MMO dinosaur survival simulator. The demo includes a few dinosaurs with male and female options, skins and colors. Enter the massive island to explore beautifully lush biomes. Every tree, plant, rock and cliff-side is modeled with super realism and day/night cycle shows off all varied elements in the environment. The demo didn't include gathering or eating plants, but there were hints of interactive vegetation.



Join your friends in a group and scour the landscape hunting down prey. Each dinosaur is cleverly and carefully modeled and each one has its own dino-calls. The developers "spared no expense" when designing these realistic Jurassic creatures.
