Perfect Vermin is a low poly first person arcade sandbox smasher! Find the alien vermin who imitate office objects like chairs, doors, toilets, etc... then smash them! The next office is more interesting as you continue and sometimes surreal... either way, its fun to smash everything in an office!

https://itsthemaceo.itch.io/perfect-vermin

Honestly, as an IT professional this game is quite a stress reliever. I love going around the office and smashing desks of those stubborn employees and smashing the stupid copier that always breaks! While I'm at it, lets go in the kitchen and smash everything...
  • Got a call from the conference room? Smash It!
  • Executive driving you nuts with their nuances? Smash It!
  • Receptionist forwarding SPAM calls to you? Smash It!

The developers provide a native port and it runs beautifully! Considering its low poly, it should run on just about any computer. I never had any...

In Sound Mind is a first person psychological thriller that takes place in the mind of the main character. Discover fears, solve puzzles, hide from past demons and discover a path to sanity... well maybe.

In Sound Mind demo ran well in Proton at first, but there is a large grocery store area that ended up killing my frame rate down to unplayable. I tried tweaking the game video settings but nothing worked. It is a clever game with spooky dream sequences, but unfortunately my video card couldn't handle the large areas.

Ghostrunner Demo in Proton

Ghostrunner is a speedrun melee slasher bundled with parkour elements. You are a rogue robot running for your life, but this isn't the end... is it? Jump and run across walls, climb up ledges and slow down time to avoid projectiles. Find who you are and why you were created!

https://store.steampowered.com/agecheck/app/1139900/

Ghostrunner demo runs in Proton perfectly on my GeForce GTX 1060. After the game downloaded there was an initial directx installation that took a few minutes, but when it was done I could play without any problems. After I removed the game and re-downloaded, it wouldn't launch. So I had to delete the wineprefix in the compadata folder. Interesting that it doesn't have the same name as the steapowered.com path. Make sure to delete: 1249200

Honestly, this is not my type of game. I love parkour games like Mirror's Edge, but in the demo a single shot from a soldier will end your life, then return you...

I haven't seen graphics this epic in a long time. I found myself admiring the natural stone walls in a cave, the small puddles on the ground and edges of walls reflecting light. Its pretty amazing!

Medal Of Honor Allied Assault Warchest

Medal Of Honor is a military frontal assault first person shooter based on the battles in World War II. Play as U.S. Army Sergeant John Baker in the front lines of Operation Overlord, Battle of the Bulge and DDay. Warchest includes the original Allied Assault and both expansions:
  • Spearhead
  • Breakthrough

I never did a guide for Allied Assault because I was never able to run it in Wine until now. This game was developed in 2002 and though the graphics are hard on the eyes, its a pretty fun war game with a lot of action. It displays features and scenarios before its time. The Call of Duty series was inspired by Allied Assault.

The key to playing Allied Assault in Wine is adding the following command for Nvidia video cards:
export __GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700

In PlayOnLinux you have to paste this in the Miscellanous Tab area at the bottom...

9 Monkeys of Shaolin in Proton

9 Monkeys of Shaolin is a story-driven side-scrolling kung fu beat-em up game with beautiful low poly graphics. The story begins as Wei Cheng is the only survivor of his village after a brutal slaughter. The Shaolin monks save and revive him almost from death its-self. Begin training to take revenge on the ruthless evil who slayed his family! Wield melee weapons and upgrade them as you progress.

The Prologue is currently available for free on Steam and runs perfectly in Proton on my GeForce GTX 1060. Made in Unreal Engine, there didn't need to be any workaround or overrides necessary. I did install Media Foundation just to be safe as its very common for Unreal game to utilize it for videos and cut-scenes. There is even a co-op feature over local network or split-screen available.

In The Surge you awaken in the ruins of a huge corporation with an exoskeleton suite as your advantage. Fight rogue robots and augmented zombies as you learn what happened to the CREO corporation. This is a Dark Souls-ish combat game with the ability to target specific areas of the enemies unarmored body parts. Use combos and dodges to slay clever minions who have similar attacks as yourself.

https://www.gog.com/game/the_surge

PlayOnLinux was able to handle The Surge with Wine 5.0 64-bit and DXVK on my GeForce GTX 1060. Loading, saving and keyboard/mouse controls worked without issues as you can see in the video. I warn you, this game is pretty unforgiving as all the enemies re-spawn even when you return to a previous area. There are only checkpoints which save your progress, so you may find yourself dying an clearing out the same areas over and over.

Path of Titans is a MMO dinosaur survival simulator. The demo includes a few dinosaurs with male and female options, skins and colors. Enter the massive island to explore beautifully lush biomes. Every tree, plant, rock and cliff-side is modeled with super realism and day/night cycle shows off all varied elements in the environment. The demo didn't include gathering or eating plants, but there were hints of interactive vegetation.

Join your friends in a group and scour the landscape hunting down prey. Each dinosaur is cleverly and carefully modeled and each one has its own dino-calls. The developers "spared no expense" when designing these realistic Jurassic creatures.

I'm happy to present Path of Titans demo comes with a native Linux version which is cross-platform compatible. Meaning we can join servers from smartphones, PC, Windows alike. Unfortunately the island is so large you may find yourself...

Hellblade is a 3rd person psychological action adventure. Senua is trying to fight her inner-demons as she searching for her husband. You will fight in melee combat against all kinds of evil spirits as your inner voices help you solve the clever puzzles. Virus Z is a top-down zombie shooter much like Left4Dead. You start on top of a building with your NCP companion. Pick a weapon on the table and some health, then start working your way through the city slaying zombies, hordes and mini bosses.

The demo includes a few linear maps and locations for you to traverse. If you survive and make it to the safe zone on the other side of the map, then you can continue to the next map.

Vouivre Prototype in PlayOnLinux

Vouivre is an interesting FPS where you explore a short dungeon and discover an ancient civilization possessed by aliens. Very similar to headcrabs, the alien will attach its-self to the hosts head and control them. Explore hallways of temple-like dungeon and find that you are not alone. After brutally slaying a host with your knife you realize it won't be enough to survive. Find a weapon and stay alive!

Vouivre ran well in ProtonGE with PlayOnLinux. I was able to play through the short demo without any crashes or graphical artifacts. This demo is very polished and professional. Voice acting is top notch as well as visuals. Animation and sound effects are engaging and professionally done. Too bad this was a student project as it would make an amazing full game!

Terraria Journey's End

Terraria (GOG) has been a family favorite for a few years now. The four of us will play co-op via LAN for hours each week and eventually get tired of it... then a few months later we'll create a new world and start playing a few hours a week again.

This game is never ending. You can explore, build, craft and fight all kinds of creatures forever. There are costumes, special events, bosses and all kinds of biomes. There is never a dull moment as long as you enjoy digging. You will spend hundreds of hours digging for ores and crafting them into bars to build your weapons, tools, armor and much more.

Terraria has re-invented the platform game with its huge sandbox worlds and non-linear exploration. Go anywhere you want, avoid traps and hordes... store all of your loot and go looking for more. What else could you want?

Quests?
Yes, Terraria has that too...

Tower Defense?

Assassin's Creed Origins in Proton

Every Assassin's Creed game I've played has run in Linux with the help of Wine and DXVK. I've always used PlayOnLinux and installed a legacy version of Uplay because of Windows XP compatibility. You can find those step-by-step guides here on GamersOnLinux. There are a LOT of steps and sometimes Uplay will run and other times you have to start over. Once you get the game downloaded you run Uplay offline otherwise a simple update will break it.

Not Any More!!!

Steam and Proton handle downloading Assassin's Creed Origins and running Uplay without issue. Somehow its painlessly compatible with Proton and I was able to run the game first try! That is impressive after all the previous steps I used to run one game.

Thank you Steam!

Borderlands 3 in Proton

Borderlands 3 initially released only on the Epic Store. Later it was released on Steam and of course we wanted to see if Proton could handle it. We prefer a native port like all the other Borderlands, but until then lets play in Proton?

borderlands-14.jpg

My daughter and I have played through all of the Borderlands games in co-op modes over LAN. They all ran almost flawlessly. In Borderlands 3 they have introduced the ShiFT account which still includes LAN play and online as always. We were not able to play over LAN so I had to purchase two copies of the game. We were able to play in Proton 5 and the game ran decent after the initial stutter of loading shader cache.

As we played there was one serious problem... a video is supposed to play during an early quest with Lilith. The video on the TV never plays and the quest is stuck. After reading several post with Windows and Linux gamers having the same problem, turns out Borderlands is using Media Foundation...

System Shock Remake Demo

If you haven't played System Shock 1 or 2, these are a must play FPS horror/action/stealth/hack/adventure game!
The original System Shock was made 1994 and was one of the most interactive sci-fi games made at the time. This is no run-n-gun arcade game! You can loot just about any container, solve puzzles, fight robots and zombified crew. The original game had clunky controls which made it very hard to play, but today it can play on just about any computer made.

There is an enhanced edition available on GOG which supports higher resolution and better controls

Manual Samuel in Proton

Manual Samuel is a clever comedy 2D puzzle/action game where you are forced to control every single one of Samuel's extremities:
  • Eyes
  • Breathing
  • Hands
  • Feet
  • Balance
This is no easy task because you have to do multiple things at once using multiple keys. Its hilarious watching him fall over or throw hot coffee in his own face. Each scene is a new challenge to make Samuel do normal every day things manually.

Proton in Steam runs the game almost perfectly. The only problem I had was fullscreen. The game thinks its in fullscreen, but the top of the window is visible and the Linux panel is still visible. So I minimized the panel and just left it like in the video.
