Assassin's Creed Origins in Proton

Every Assassin's Creed game I've played has run in Linux with the help of Wine and DXVK. I've always used PlayOnLinux and installed a legacy version of Uplay because of Windows XP compatibility. You can find those step-by-step guides here on GamersOnLinux. There are a LOT of steps and sometimes Uplay will run and other times you have to start over. Once you get the game downloaded you run Uplay offline otherwise a simple update will break it.

Not Any More!!!

Steam and Proton handle downloading Assassin's Creed Origins and running Uplay without issue. Somehow its painlessly compatible with Proton and I was able to run the game first try! That is impressive after all the previous steps I used to run one game.

Thank you Steam!

Assassin's Creed Origin runs great in Mint with my GeForce GTX 1060 and Proton. Frame rates are smooth and traversing around the cities is stunning! I have only taken time to explore...

Borderlands 3 in Proton

Borderlands 3 initially released only on the Epic Store. Later it was released on Steam and of course we wanted to see if Proton could handle it. We prefer a native port like all the other Borderlands, but until then lets play in Proton?

borderlands-14.jpg

My daughter and I have played through all of the Borderlands games in co-op modes over LAN. They all ran almost flawlessly. In Borderlands 3 they have introduced the ShiFT account which still includes LAN play and online as always. We were not able to play over LAN so I had to purchase two copies of the game. We were able to play in Proton 5 and the game ran decent after the initial stutter of loading shader cache.

As we played there was one serious problem... a video is supposed to play during an early quest with Lilith. The video on the TV never plays and the quest is stuck. After reading several post with Windows and Linux gamers having the same problem, turns out Borderlands is using Media Foundation...

System Shock Remake Demo

If you haven't played System Shock 1 or 2, these are a must play FPS horror/action/stealth/hack/adventure game!
The original System Shock was made 1994 and was one of the most interactive sci-fi games made at the time. This is no run-n-gun arcade game! You can loot just about any container, solve puzzles, fight robots and zombified crew. The original game had clunky controls which made it very hard to play, but today it can play on just about any computer made.

There is an enhanced edition available on GOG which supports higher resolution and better controls
http://www.gamersonlinux.com/forum/threads/system-shock-enhanced-edition-guide.2412/

But Nightdive Studios is doing a complete remake of the original game with the Unreal Engine
https://store.steampowered.com/app/482400/System_Shock/

Sadly Steam and GOG only offer the Windows version of the Demo
But there is a Linux demo out there somewhere... I...

Manual Samuel in Proton

Manual Samuel is a clever comedy 2D puzzle/action game where you are forced to control every single one of Samuel's extremities:
  • Eyes
  • Breathing
  • Hands
  • Feet
  • Balance
This is no easy task because you have to do multiple things at once using multiple keys. Its hilarious watching him fall over or throw hot coffee in his own face. Each scene is a new challenge to make Samuel do normal every day things manually.

Proton in Steam runs the game almost perfectly. The only problem I had was fullscreen. The game thinks its in fullscreen, but the top of the window is visible and the Linux panel is still visible. So I minimized the panel and just left it like in the video.

Timeout is a brilliant point-n-click 2D 3D action adventure mystery. Everyone live by time. If your time runs out, you die. So of course the world has commercialized buying & selling time to stay alive. Investigate a case where fake time is killing people because they are deceived into purchasing a clever deal on time.

Timeout demo ran perfectly in Linux. I was able to play and control my character without any graphical issues or performance issues on my GeForce GTX 1060.

I picked up ENSLAVED™: Odyssey to the West™ Premium Edition during a Humble Bundle sale. After checking https://www.protondb.com/ first of course. It runs GREAT in Proton!
I was using Proton 5.0-8 but I'm sure it runs fine in Proton 5.0-9 as well. Cutscenes, gameplay, performance, load/save all worked as expected. Definitely worth the sale!

150 years after a global war, a survival ship crashes in America. Play as Monkey (the beefy strong tempered tough guy) who is forced to escort Trip (the young beautiful woman) through city rubble, puzzles and mechanical enemies. Work together and traverse your way across dangerous terrain using parkour, weapons and Trips special abilities.

It Lies is a short free horror game where you play a little girl looking for her dog in a field of wheat. What could possibly go wrong, right?

You can call out for your dog and search in the direction of its barking... but be careful, there is something else out there that mimics the bark.

Is it human?
Is it alien?

Typing Of The Dead

Remember those cheesey old zombie shooter games at the arcade? Bad voice acting, over-the-top scenarios where you follow the game on-rails shooting zombies? Yup, they have one for typing lessons.

Typing Of The Dead

Search online for a free download and install with PlayOnLinux or Steam (Proton)

It runs in super low resolution, but the game runs great and you can even play co-op over a local network. Of course the textures are super low quality and of course the animation is really bad... but its really fun to type the words in place of shooting guns.

How To Survive 2 Review

A few years back I was able to play through all of How To Survive - A 3rd person survival action game based on several tiered islands. As you slay zombies, search for food, water and resources... you can craft a bunch of neat gear and weapons. The goal was to survive night & day and leave the island alive.

The game ran well in PlayOnLinux with Wine and only a few minor issues, but I was still able to play through the entire campaign cooperatively with my wife.

survive-0.jpg

How To Survive 2 is a promising sequel that ultimately fails. From the beginning it didn't play in PlayOnLinux with Wine or even Proton. There were reports of an anti-cheat in place that was not compatible with Wine. Sure enough it didn't work in Proton either. So I would check back every few months to see if it was fixed or some kind of good result. One day it happened, someone posted on protondb.com that How To Survive was now working Proton. Gave...

Westerado in Proton

Westerado is a 2D open-world, 8-bit inspired, western shoot-em-up action adventure game. Your family was murdered by a bandit and you chase him and his posse down. But first, you got to find him by investigating and asking questions around town. Interact with everyone in the game, quick travel to areas on the map, or lone-gun it riding your horse across dangerous terrain. Sneak through underground mines or across barren deserts. Either way... you are gonna DIE!

Your reputation play an important role in Westerado as well. Locals will help you if you help them first, or they will kill you if you play hard-ball. Once I shot a turkey on some farmers land and he attacked me. Every time I went back to his farm I was his sworn enemy. Be careful who and what you shoot.

Running Westerado was flawless with Proton 5.0-7
Never had any issues with settings, keyboard/mouse or load/save.

Mint 19.3 64-bit
GeForce GTX 1060

I have been playing Alan Wake recently (tested previously but never finished) and decided to give DXVK a try. It runs really well with only minimum graphical artifacts. Other than the audio not working during the cut-scene's it is an awesome game! I love the lighting effects and shadow/wind effects. The game mechanics and puzzles are really fun and intense.

I picked up Lara Croft and The Temple of Osiris when Steam announced it was free. Then searched https://www.protondb.com/ to see what the rating was. Most of them were gold, so I gave it a try.

It ran great with Proton 4.11-13 and I was able to play co-op with keyboard/mouse and my Amazon Xbox Basics controller. Worked out-of-the-box
