Blastronaut is a space procedurally generated resource gathering sci-fi game. Use your blue goo gun and jetpack to break apart blocks on the planet and find precious resources. Upgrade your machines in order to buy fuel and other abilities and tools.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1392650/BLASTRONAUT/

I played the beta demo in Steam and never saw a SteamPlay warning... so I'm not sure if it was a native version or not? But either way, the game played beautifully! I was able to maneuver with my jetpack and dig down into the planet to find the best resources. Be careful not to waste your fuel... otherwise you might not make it back to the surface.

Deiland in Proton

I first play Deiland on mobile a few years back and though it was interesting. Play as a boy on a small planet harvesting corn, crafting a camp and defending against aliens. Then I picked it up on Steam during a sale and found it to be even more fun! Not only are the graphics better but the interaction and controls seem more immersive on my large monitor.

Proton was able to handle Deiland without any issues on my GeForce GTX 1060. I was able to complete quests, load and save. If you like casual survival games with quests and action, this is a good one.

Mirror's Edge in Proton

Back in 2013 I posted a step-by-step guide on how to install Steam in PlayOnLinux and run Mirror's Edge. It was a lot of worked to get it setup. But today you can seriously just run it in Proton through Linux Steam.

mirrors-3.jpg

Game Play

Mirror's Edge runs great in Proton as it is a DirectX 9 game. I was able to crank all the settings to high and play without any bugs or crashes. The game saved and continued without issues either. This is great for us gamers because Proton handles everything from DirectX & Visual C+ installation to Physx setup.

Them and Us is a 3rd person action horror adventure made in Unreal Engine. Play as Alicia waking up in a mysterious room in a huge mansion. As she searches for clues and tools she quickly discovers she is not alone. Explore the mansion and find weapons and tools to survive. What happened to the people who lived here? Can she find her way out alive?

I stumbled on Them and Us searching for horror games on itch.io
I was unable to extract the download, but found the demo was also available on Steam. I was able to download and play the whole demo with Proton in Steam.

This is an amazing Resident-Evilesque-Inspired action game! In fact you can choose to have static camera views just like the original Resident Evil games, or use over-the-shoulder views. The game is fairly slow but intense at the same time. Progress is...

Fallout 4 in Proton

I tested Fallout 4 a few years ago and found that there were some serious mouse and audio issues. Tried a bunch of workarounds and gave up. Test again later and same problems. Even the older Fallout games had some problems but could be resolved with a few hacks and overrides.

Today Fallout 4 runs great in Proton because of the DXVK efforts and faudio compatibility. I was able to run Fallout 4 with the following "launch options":

Code:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command%

Fallout 4 plays almost perfectly on my GeForce GX 1060 with everything set to Ultra! There area few graphical bugs with loading textures/decals, but its rarely noticeable.

Chex Quest

Remember the old Chex Quest game in 1996 by Digital Café as a Chex cereal promotion? I don't, but I remember reading about it. This was an attempt to create a non-violent first person shooter for kids age 6-9 where you can shoot slimy aliens who are trying to take your Chex cereal away.

chex-34.jpg

Team Chex Quest HD have re-created the original game in a modern game engine and its totally free!
https://store.steampowered.com/app/804270/Chex_Quest_HD/

Slay green slime aliens with your special laser weapons and even a spoon. Find the keys and navigate your way through the levels leaving no alien traces behind. There are secret areas, interactive elements and of course a non violent arsenal of cereal weapons.

Proton handled Chex Quest just fine in Steam. I was able to download, launch and play several levels without any bugs or artifacts.

Assassin's Creed Origins in Proton

Every Assassin's Creed game I've played has run in Linux with the help of Wine and DXVK. I've always used PlayOnLinux and installed a legacy version of Uplay because of Windows XP compatibility. You can find those step-by-step guides here on GamersOnLinux. There are a LOT of steps and sometimes Uplay will run and other times you have to start over. Once you get the game downloaded you run Uplay offline otherwise a simple update will break it.

Not Any More!!!

Steam and Proton handle downloading Assassin's Creed Origins and running Uplay without issue. Somehow its painlessly compatible with Proton and I was able to run the game first try! That is impressive after all the previous steps I used to run one game.

Thank you Steam!

Assassin's Creed Origin runs great in Mint with my GeForce GTX 1060 and Proton. Frame rates are smooth and traversing around the cities is stunning! I have only taken time to explore...

Borderlands 3 in Proton

Borderlands 3 initially released only on the Epic Store. Later it was released on Steam and of course we wanted to see if Proton could handle it. We prefer a native port like all the other Borderlands, but until then lets play in Proton?

borderlands-14.jpg

My daughter and I have played through all of the Borderlands games in co-op modes over LAN. They all ran almost flawlessly. In Borderlands 3 they have introduced the ShiFT account which still includes LAN play and online as always. We were not able to play over LAN so I had to purchase two copies of the game. We were able to play in Proton 5 and the game ran decent after the initial stutter of loading shader cache.

As we played there was one serious problem... a video is supposed to play during an early quest with Lilith. The video on the TV never plays and the quest is stuck. After reading several post with Windows and Linux gamers having the same problem, turns out Borderlands is using Media Foundation...

A Story About My Uncle

A Story About My Uncle is not a read-along adventure... or a children's book...
This is an epic first person physics adventure where your grappling hook and jump tricks allow you to traverse amazing terrain. Jump super high with your suit and grapple floating islands, rocks and structures. Fling yourself around cliffs and waterfalls above bottomless worlds. Meet alien creatures who inhibit these mysterious floating lands and use energy crystals fly themselves across the landscape. All in the name of finding uncle Fred.

A Story About My Uncle ran great in Steam with my GeForce GTX 1060. I never had any performance issues and the graphics settings were cranked to high. This Linux port made with UDK (Unreal Development Kit) in 2012 by a group of students at Södertörn University.

Manual Samuel in Proton

Manual Samuel is a clever comedy 2D puzzle/action game where you are forced to control every single one of Samuel's extremities:
  • Eyes
  • Breathing
  • Hands
  • Feet
  • Balance
This is no easy task because you have to do multiple things at once using multiple keys. Its hilarious watching him fall over or throw hot coffee in his own face. Each scene is a new challenge to make Samuel do normal every day things manually.

Proton in Steam runs the game almost perfectly. The only problem I had was fullscreen. The game thinks its in fullscreen, but the top of the window is visible and the Linux panel is still visible. So I minimized the panel and just left it like in the video.

Bendy And The Ink Machine base on a cartoon made back in the 30's where you (an animator) re-visits the old studio and find that something has gone terribly wrong. Expect jump scares, spooky cartoon-esque environments, survival elements and puzzles. This first person horror adventure doesn't disappoint. It may be short, but currently on sale during the Steam summer sale.

I picked up ENSLAVED™: Odyssey to the West™ Premium Edition during a Humble Bundle sale. After checking https://www.protondb.com/ first of course. It runs GREAT in Proton!
I was using Proton 5.0-8 but I'm sure it runs fine in Proton 5.0-9 as well. Cutscenes, gameplay, performance, load/save all worked as expected. Definitely worth the sale!

Play as Monkey (the beefy strong tempered tough guy) who is forced to escort Trip (the young beautiful woman) through city rubble, puzzles and mechanical enemies. Snake Pass in Proton

Snake Pass looks like a kids game from Nintendo, but after playing it is quite a realistic snake challenge. Slither up and around bamboo objects to collect bubbles, coins and medallions to complete each level. It was definitely created with a controller in mind, but I was able to play with keyboard & mouse.

This is one of the most original ideas I've seen in a long time. Moving a snake in any direction with gravity as your enemy is quite difficult. There is a rhythm and synchronization with movement in order to traverse the objects. Once you reach the top where a coin or bubble resides, its quite satisfying.

Performance was great in Proton with my GeForce GTX 1060. Never had any game-stopping stutters or save/load issues. It just ran awesome!

I initially tested Dungeon Siege III in PlayOnLinux back in 2015 and posted a guide. I was able to finish the game and really enjoyed it!

Now I'm replaying Dungeon Siege III in Steam with Proton and even co-op with my wife and two controllers.
So far Proton is handling the game perfectly! It's even funner playing co-op and the adventure is just as interesting and action-packed as before.

My GeForce GTX 1060 is able to handle the game without any issues and the environments are beautiful!

If you see Dungeon Siege III on sale, definitely pick it up!

Doom 2016 in Proton

Remember DOOM 3?

The first time I played it I was awe struck with the beautiful graphics, creepy monsters and scripted events. Like visions of hell, floating objects, automated machinery and monsters crawling on the walls.

Doom 2016 is a re-creation of Doom 3 better in every way. Glory kill minions with your bare-gloves, parkour across levels to reach power ups and level up your weapons and skills. This is what everyone wanted! An epic bloody horror space action FPS with all of our favorite monsters.

In Linux Proton 5.0-7 handles Doom 2016 (vulkan) perfectly! I was able to launch, configure graphics settings and play without any problems. Game-play and controls handle nicely with my GTX 1060. This game is beautifully made. Every objects looks hand-crafted and all the gory details are there. Anyone who loves FPS shooters has to buy this one.

How To Survive 2 Review

A few years back I was able to play through all of How To Survive - A 3rd person survival action game based on several tiered islands. As you slay zombies, search for food, water and resources... you can craft a bunch of neat gear and weapons. The goal was to survive night & day and leave the island alive.

The game ran well in PlayOnLinux with Wine and only a few minor issues, but I was still able to play through the entire campaign cooperatively with my wife.

survive-0.jpg

How To Survive 2 is a promising sequel that ultimately fails. From the beginning it didn't play in PlayOnLinux with Wine or even Proton. There were reports of an anti-cheat in place that was not compatible with Wine. Sure enough it didn't work in Proton either. So I would check back every few months to see if it was fixed or some kind of good result. One day it happened, someone posted on protondb.com that How To Survive was now working Proton. Gave...

Westerado in Proton

Westerado is a 2D open-world, 8-bit inspired, western shoot-em-up action adventure game. Your family was murdered by a bandit and you chase him and his posse down. But first, you got to find him by investigating and asking questions around town. Interact with everyone in the game, quick travel to areas on the map, or lone-gun it riding your horse across dangerous terrain. Sneak through underground mines or across barren deserts. Either way... you are gonna DIE!

Your reputation play an important role in Westerado as well. Locals will help you if you help them first, or they will kill you if you play hard-ball. Once I shot a turkey on some farmers land and he attacked me. Every time I went back to his farm I was his sworn enemy. Be careful who and what you shoot.

Running Westerado was flawless with Proton 5.0-7

I crowdfunded Wolcen Lords of Mayhem back when it was on Kickstarter as Umbra. Hoping they would do a Linux port and implement co-op they finally finished it and runs great in Proton. I'm assuming it will probably never get a Linux port, but as long as my investment was well rewarded I'm ok with playing in Proton.

I was able to run Wolcen with all the settings on high and can play offline or online without any serious issues. This game is beautiful! Epic animated backgrounds with waves and soldiers... I'm not regretting my $15 cost years and years ago.
