Icewind Dale 2 Guide

  • 26
Icewind Dale 2 was among the first computer games to make use of the 3rd edition Dungeons and Dragons rules, and it offered a lot of Forgotten Realms specific rules as well. Even though I usually found the original Icewind Dale to have a greater sense of exploration to it, this game allows for greater character customization. The new skills and feats system that D&D 3ed introduced really make this a much richer experience in game mechanics.

Icewind Dale Guide

Icewind Dale is another classic from the Baldur's Gate era. The game is set in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting for Dungeons and Dragons, the same world used by Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights. The game is using the same engine as Baldur's Gate as well, but this is a much more action oriented game. There is very little free exploring, and side quests are at a minimum compared to many other rpg's. Most side quests are just small quests that come up while doing the main quest, and are usually always directly related to the task at hand.

You also create your own party of six characters in this game. This means there will be no interaction between the characters in your party, but you get to create your own ideal adventuring group.

Baldur's Gate 2 is the much improved sequel to the original Baldur's Gate. It was released in 2000 and started what has become expected by most modern rpg's. Party members have their own agenda, and might even leave the party if you anger them. Party members also interact and certain people will not get along. The story in the game is very immersive and one of the greatest aspects of the game.

This game is by many considered the grandfather of 3rd person party based rpg's. It takes place in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting for Dungeons and Dragons. Game mechanics are adapted from the 2nd edition Dungeons and Dragons rules. This game features a compelling story with interesting twists, well done characters and a big world to explore.

I will begin this guide by saying that I absolutely love this game. This game is an rpg where you are practically given no quest line to follow, no clear goal forward except "Find Xardas". You are left to explore the world, learn about the opposing factions. Do quests for whoever you wish, even all factions. Build up a reputation among the factions and learn what you can about the world and what bigger plots might be going on.

Gothic 2 Gold Guide

During the time this game came out, the developer Piranha Bytes had almost reached rock star status among their fans. Gothic 2 follows faithfully in the style and mood of the original game. Greatly expanding the game world and still sticking to the oldschool rpg formula. The game is difficult and there are no quest markers or the like. Even in the very beginning of the game will you encounter enemies that are far too difficult to fight, so you have to learn to be careful in the wilderness until you have become much higher level. Thorough exploration of the game world is also a big part of the game.

The Night of the Raven expansion was never released in any other language than German. Piranha Bytes is German, and all Gothic games were originally only made in German. The Gothic 2 expansion was not released in any other language and was only later made available for non-german gamers in the Gothic 2 Gold release.

Quest for Glory 1-4 Guide

The Quest for Glory series is from the days of Sierra adventure games. The first game was originally released in 1989 under the name Hero's Quest: So You Want To Be A Hero, but name was shortly changed to Quest For Glory since another company had just released another game with an almost identical title. The one thing that distinguishes these games from the other Sierra adventure games, are the rpg elements. You can select one of three classes when you start a new game, and you can import your character from the previous game into the next. Fighters also have the chance to become a Paladin, a class which is only available to an imported character that earned it in a previous game.

This game still makes use of the same engine that the previous two games used. As a result it was beginning to look dated even upon release. Opinions about this game is mixed, many consider it too easy since you can get a dragon on your party early on. The game is also shorter that the previous entries. Personally I love this game, and I love the fact that I can get a dragon on my party early on. It might make it a bit easy at times, but this game still got that sense of exploration that I love in the previous titles.
