Metro Last Light in Proton

Continue the story as Artyom during post apocalyptic Moscow in the underground Metro. Travel through miles of track visiting small communities of survivors and garrisons. The story unveils some twists impacting who is actually winning but I won't unveil that here... but the "dark one" plays a main part in Artyoms survival.

mlight-34.jpg

Game-play is almost identical to Metro 2033 with ride-a-longs and cutscenes. Most of the game is linear with some arena-ish areas that allow exploration. You are given the option to sneak or run-n-gun but stealth is much easier for survival since there are only save checkpoints. Specific bullets are uses as currency, but not ammo meant for your weapons. There are also numerous modifications you can use to make your weapons more efficient or quieter.

Sadly I bought Metro Last Light on GOG with did not provide a Linux version. However proton handles the game perfectly! I was able to play though without any major game-breaking...

The Metro series takes place in Moscow after a global nuclear holocaust in 2013. Survivors now live in underground subway tunnels call Metro. But you are not the only ones lurking in the dark. Fight against Nazi soldiers, mutated monsters and carefully explore the frozen surface. Many scenes are based on survival wave-based ride-along action sequences. Be careful to not waste any ammo, it is hard to find in the Metro.

m2033-35.jpg

I'm playing through the Metro series starting with 2033. I've never finished the other two but only tested Last Light. If I remember correctly, Last Light and Exodus both have Linux versions on Steam. Unfortunately I own 2003 and Last Light on GOG, so no Linux versions for me. Metro 2033 ran perfectly with all settings on max in Proton. There was only one bug I noticed, after reloading the pistol, you can't aim down the sites unless you switch weapons. That is about it!

Nine Parchments in Proton

Nine Parchments is a Magicka inspired, linear action magic adventure by Frozenbyte! Play cooperative with 3 friends and slay monsters with various spells like:
  • Fire
  • Ice
  • Lightning
  • Steam
  • Death
  • Life
  • Physics
  • Shadow
Even combine these spells together to create unimaginable destruction.

https://www.gog.com/en/game/nine_parchments

I was able to play Nine Parchments with deprecated PlayOnLinux using Proton Experimental 8. It even ran with stable versions of Wine 8 staging as well. The detailed backgrounds stutter a bit on two of my computers, but it didn't affect game-play at all. The game is rather enjoyable but extremely hard too! Reviving your friends is very difficult and playing the same area over and over can be repetitive if you keep dying. Which is bound to happen!

I would love to see a native Linux version like some of the Trine games but sadly only Windows version is available.

Once again, Dunwall is under threat but this time the empresses half-sister Delilah is threatening to take power as an evil sorceress. Play as Corvo or Emily and explore a whole new world: Karnaca capital of Serkonos. A new enemy lurks in the form of robotic soldiers and witches, but expect to learn some new deadly stealth skills as well.

I picked up Dishonored 2 on a GOG sale and naturally tried to play using PlayOnLinux. But I was unable to even launch the game with Wine or Proton. So I tried Steam "non-steam" game and it ran fairly well. Every once in a while I would get a stuttering frame rate issue probably related to Vulkan shaders, but other than that it was a beautiful game! I was able to run almost all the settings on high. Also one of the best looking skulls I've ever seen in a video game!

I've had SOMA for a few years on GOG and finally broke down to give it a try. I'm a big Amnesia fan so I knew I would like this horror thriller by Frictional Games. I wasn't disappointed! Not only does it run native in Linux, it ran beautifully and the visual effects are AMAZING! The monsters are pretty terrifying and your only defense is hiding, closing doors behind you and running. Enjoy!

Genesis Alpha One in Linux

Genesis Alpha One is a space management first person shooter adventure where you extract resources and craft to improve your ship and crew. Use the retractor beam or an away mission to gather all kinds of interstellar resources and then craft new items to power your ship and create new cloned crewmembers.
Keep a close eye on your ship as alien stowaways creep on board and start tearing it apart and infecting your crew.

https://www.gog.com/en/game/genesis_alpha_one_deluxe_edition

I was able to pick up Genesis Alpha One for free on GOG and finally gave it chance in PlayOnLinux. I never had any bugs or crashes and it ran beautifully with all the settings on high. If you love micromanaging your ship and gathering/crafting items, this is your space game! It is nice to have some action as well! The only missing piece is the intro videos which require Media Foundation, but no loss to the game play or training at all.

Streets of Rogue in Linux

Streets of Rogue is a procedurally generated action stealth game with many classes, abilities and random events. Classes all have advantages and disadvantages which can help you to complete your missions. Enter the streets with your friends among NCP thugs, police, gangsters, mobsters, vampires, gorillas and even zombies. Take your chances by completing missions to earn money or just roam around an break-in to a building for some loot.

The streets are harsh and unforgiving, but so are you!

I've been following Streets of Rogue since it was in development on moddb.com and it has become quite an epic game with so many unpredictable scenarios. Replayability is the reall niche here... you'll never have the same experience twice, but mission do repeat themselves.

Thankfully Matt Dabrowski was kind enough to creat a native Linux port for us and it plays beautifully! Everything is destructible and 8-bit graphics style.

I was able to pick it up on...

What happened and how did this happen? Explore detailed pre-rendered desolate landscapes! Interact with interesting characters with clever dialog and optional conversation paths.

The Brotherhood was kind enough to provide us with a native Linux port and it runs beautifully in 1920x1080 resolution. This isn't an open world game, it is very restrictive and linear, but still a lot to explore.

Stardew Valley

I kept hearing the hype about Stardew Valley and thought it was just another farming/crafting game like many others. I did notice there is LAN co-op available which is always great for playing with the family.
So I finally checked it out... I love it!

Farming is the main feature of the game, but there is still a lot to do. Cut trees, mine rocks, plant seeds, water crops, fish, meet towns people and much more. There is even fighting in the caves or at night!

Like many crafting games you have a short list of available items to craft, but you can learn recipe's and level up your skills to be more efficient.

The developers were nice enough to provide a Linux version for us and everything works perfectly! I was able to host a co-op game and my wife-n-daughters joined with out any problems. The game runs smoothly and there are plenty areas to explore and events to do together.

Children of Morta is a couch co-op action RPG in a fantasy world of dungeon crawling. Enter the lives of the Bergson family where their land is becoming corrupted by darkness and evil. Slowly level up each character starting with the mother and father but later adding their children. Change characters between dungeon runs and learn each one of their intricate abilities. There is no permadeath, but survival is key to moving ahead and stopping hordes of evil.

https://www.gog.com/game/children_of_morta

Children of Morta comes with a native Linux edition and it runs very nicely. Performance isn't an issues since it is 2D pixel art. I was able to play with keyboard/mouse and an Xbox controller in co-op. The one frustrating thing about this game is... its very hard! We never finished the first dungeon. I love that the dungeons are procedurally generated... which is great, but until you finish the boss, you can't make it to the next level. There are several other...

Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 is another epic first person shooter where you play as a mercenary near Russian borders in an open world. Complete missions and return to your hideout to upgrade your weapons add accessories and replenish your health. Awake the next day for another bloodbath as a Sniper, Ghost or Warrior. You can also explore by driving vehicles or using your trusted drone and find secret stashes and secret sniping locations.

https://www.gog.com/game/sniper_ghost_warrior_3

As you can see in the above video, Sniper GW 3 plays pretty well in PlayOnLinux with Wine.

Sadly there is a problem
... When I start a new game it runs great with high frame rates like a native game, but when I quit and reload the game the frame rates drop to the point of unplayable.

I've tried different versions of Wine, Wine staging and even Proton... nothing seems to fix this problem. I've researched online and even posted on reddit about it...

Necrovision Lost Company in PlayOnLinux

Necrovision is a WWII Military shooter franchise with a zombie-Wolfenstein feel. Lost Company is a prequel throwing you back into battle with a small platoon of soldiers who sometimes help you take out zombies and possessed Nazi. Except you are now a German soldier uniting Axis and Allied troops again the forces of evil.
New weapons, new levels, plane fights, weapon upgrades and much more.

Lost Company was made in 2010 and runs perfectly in Wine on PlayOnLinux. I didn't have any issues installing, configuring or playing as you can see in the video. It is a bit dated when compared to more recent FPS, but still fun and intense!

Unfortunately the DirectX 10 features do not run in Wine, but there is a workaround to force DirectX 9

Driver: Parallel Lines in PlayOnLinux

Driver: Parallel Lines is a GTA inspired roam-the-streets sandbox action game. Like the original Driver games, you will be driving the cities avoiding police and accomplishing tasks or missions. But like GTA, you can exit the vehicle and roam the city and steal whatever car you want. I love all the classic cars from the 1970s and character clothing styles. Even the city had a vintage look and ambiance to it.

https://www.gog.com/game/driver_parallel_lines

Driver runs fairly well in Wine, but there is a bit of stutter as it loads the distant city lines. I was able to use my Logitech MOMO racing steering wheel with force feedback. It handles nicely, but the buttons are a bit confusion to program in the game. Obviously this is not a simulation game, so I dealt with the settings and had fun roaming New York in the 1970s. Unfortunately there are only two camera modes... 3rd person and bumper view. Also, there is no support for...

Project Zomboid is not another zombie game!

Your character isn't going to run around with a chaingun mowing down hordes...

This is not a typical horror survival game...

Project Zomboid IS THE PERFECT SURVIVAL HORROR GAME!!!

Terminator Resistance is yet another chapter in the epic story of a post apocalyptic world ruled by robots. This time you join a resistance in a war torn world, looting, crafting, sneaking and cleverly taking down machines to survive. First impressions are comparing Rage and Fallout series as the game is fairly linear but full of story, NCPs and exploration.

I've only played a few hours at this point, but it runs pretty well with all the settings on epic and 1920x1080 on my GeForce GTX 1060. There is a base I arrived at and it started to slow down considerably, but still playable. When going out to explore it runs perfectly. If you are a fan of John Woo movies then you are a fan of Stranglehold! Inspired by games like Max Payne, this action FPS will satisfy all of your shooting and destruction needs.
