Native Linux

Tomb Raider 2013

It has been 10 years since I tested Tomb Raider in Linux and once again Feral is successfully at creating a Linux port that stands the test-of-time.

Not only is there a native port that still runs on today's hardware, it also runs on recent distro, kernel and drivers. I was able to play through the entire game with all settings on max without any serious issues. Yeah there is a bit of stutter here and there as with most games using Vulkan, but man this game is beautiful and worth the play through.

Portal Revolution in Linux

Portal Revolution is a sequel after the initial test subject killed GladOS. You wake up once again in a strange experimental chamber as another test subject. The modding community has created some new features not seen in Portal or Portal 2 and some new A.I. characters who help along the way.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/601360/Portal_Revolution/

Portal Revolution ran perfectly in Linux as a stand alone Linux native game. I never had any performance issues or crashes... it was extremely fun and only a few puzzles required searching online for a solution. I love the bot voice-overs and the new character plots. I can't believe Valve has not created a new Portal with some of these new laser and Pneumatic vent features! Thank you Portal community!

Dead Island in Linux

Survive a zombie apocalypse on the island of Banoi! This band of friends hack and loot their way across a massive resort island crafting weapons, tossing molotov's and slaying varying types of minions. Dead Island was released in 2011 and still looks as beautiful and detailed as many AAA games released today! I still can't believe the amount of detail in every object, plant, weapon and animation!

Dead Island in 2024 still has a native Linux port available in Steam and runs beautifully even in co-op!
One simple Launch Option:
Code:
__GL_IGNORE_GLSL_EXT_REQS=1 %command%
This allows the game to use Vulkan instead of OpenGL and it shows! There are a few minior bugs but nothing game breaking! Its crazy to think developers were considering Linux back in 2011 when so many just rely on Proton these days.

After playing the entire Black Mesa remake of Hal-Life 1, I was absolutely amazed at the quality in Zen levels. The beautiful organic alien world make of glowing vegetation and flying creatures. The details are amazing and the interactive puzzles are so creative! This whole game blew me away and I'll never play the original Half-Life again. This is what gaming is all about!

Black Mesa in Linux

Black Mesa is modder-built total conversion of Half-Life using the source engine. Anyone who has played a First Person Shooter on PC knows about Half-Life. It is one of the most original linear action sci-fi games ever made! Crowbar Collective has taken it upon themselves to create a reboot of Half-Life using more modern Source engine the entire game from beginning to end!

Black Mesa is so well done that I won't ever play the original Half-Life again! You will see some content from Half-Life 2 series but there is a lot of original content as well. I'm amazed at how detailed the models, objects and level design is... each level is so close to the original game but with beautiful lighting and detailed textures... I'm hooked! And for our bonus, they made a native port for Linux!

Valheim Free-to-play Beta

Valheim has sold millions of copies with millions of players exploring the massive map, creating Viking cities, slaying monsters, collecting loot and crafting gear. But where did it all start? The free-to-play beta of course!

Sadly I've had a hard time tracking down a download for Valheim Linux beta. I've kept it from years ago and it still runs pretty well and is still a lot of LAN co-op fun! If you still don't want to spend money on Valheim and want to play with limited features, give it a go, but have fun finding an installer.

I was able to host a listenserver and my daughters both joined on Mint PCs
Every once in a while there is a slight performance stutter. Part of it is the automatic save, but the other part may just be optimization issues. Either way, a lot of fun!

The world is not what it seems...
Enter a terrifying world where humanity is at its end, WAU monsters have taken over and you are the only one left to save us. Creatures roam in the dark you can run, you can hide, but the only way to stop them is to become one of them? Explore massive underwater facilities spanning across an ocean. Hear resonating memories from objects and bodies, figure out who you really are and work with Catherine the computer AI.

I've had SOMA for a few years on GOG and finally broke down to give it a try. I'm a big Amnesia fan so I knew I would like this horror thriller by Frictional Games. I wasn't disappointed! Not only does it run native in Linux, it ran beautifully and the visual effects are AMAZING! The monsters are pretty terrifying and your only defense is hiding, closing doors behind you and running. Enjoy!

Unreal Tournament 4 in Linux

Unreal Tournament 4 has been on hold for a long time as Epic develops other games. Thanks to the Linux community there are some dedicated developers who have made Unreal 4 available for us to play again!

Source:

Following the instructions in the reddit post, I was able to download, install, launch and sign in. Then I could play my own singleplayer training maps or local LAN maps. Thank you for including LAN!!!

I noticed some serous stutter or lag when initially playing. This must be some caching issue with Linux, Vulkan or OpenGL. Not really sure, but it sure is annoying during the first match. Once the issues are loaded up, then it plays just fine afterwards!

Streets of Rogue in Linux

Streets of Rogue is a procedurally generated action stealth game with many classes, abilities and random events. Classes all have advantages and disadvantages which can help you to complete your missions. Enter the streets with your friends among NCP thugs, police, gangsters, mobsters, vampires, gorillas and even zombies. Take your chances by completing missions to earn money or just roam around an break-in to a building for some loot.

The streets are harsh and unforgiving, but so are you!

I've been following Streets of Rogue since it was in development on moddb.com and it has become quite an epic game with so many unpredictable scenarios. Replayability is the reall niche here... you'll never have the same experience twice, but mission do repeat themselves.

Thankfully Matt Dabrowski was kind enough to creat a native Linux port for us and it plays beautifully! Everything is destructible and 8-bit graphics style.

I was able to pick it up on...

Left4Dead 2

Left4Dead 2 is a zombie apocalypse co-op shooter made by Valve with the Source engine in 2008. The story follows 4 people who are trying to survive zombie hordes with a movie-esque cinematic feel like the classic horror movies. Enjoy slaying all kinds of zombified humans and special mutated monsters with classic weapons like machetes, pistols, shotguns, UZIs and much more!

Play co-op with friends or solo with 3 bots and hack your way through running hordes of zombies to the safe house. Left4Dead 2 even includes all the maps from Left4Dead 1. Now you can play the entire story!

Valve was nice enough to port Left4Dead 2 to Linux so we can host games and join games without any need for Proton or Wine. You may notice a bit of stutter in the beginning of the video, but other than that it runs beautifully! I have hosted this game in LAN parties for years and it has always run great! There was only one instance where my game kept crashing...

Children of Morta is a couch co-op action RPG in a fantasy world of dungeon crawling. Enter the lives of the Bergson family where their land is becoming corrupted by darkness and evil. Slowly level up each character starting with the mother and father but later adding their children. Change characters between dungeon runs and learn each one of their intricate abilities. There is no permadeath, but survival is key to moving ahead and stopping hordes of evil.

Children of Morta comes with a native Linux edition and it runs very nicely. Performance isn't an issues since it is 2D pixel art. I was able to play with keyboard/mouse and an Xbox controller in co-op. The one frustrating thing about this game is... its very hard! We never finished the first dungeon. I love that the dungeons are procedurally generated... which is great, but until you finish the boss, you can't make it to the next level. There are several other...

Project Zomboid is not another zombie game!

Your character isn't going to run around with a chaingun mowing down hordes...
Your not going to hear one-liners or see finishing moves in slow motion...

This is not a typical horror survival game...

Project Zomboid IS THE PERFECT SURVIVAL HORROR GAME!!!

Customize your character class, strengths and weaknesses, then find yourself in the middle of a Kentucky county... in a zombie apocalypse! Exploration and looting is absolutely key for survival. Find food, board up windows, craft all kinds of useful items and level up your skills. Read books in order to learn how to farm, build, disassemble, engineer and customize just about anything you want. Eating and sleeping are absolutely necessary to retain energy!

This is a slow moving game where you plan every movement and life-risking choice:
