Hey, I was the one that discovered that and you saw it. I guess you just don't remember... Setting the prefix to XP fixes the problem.

I have never seen any benefits of switching away from XP as the Win version in wine. In fact I have only experienced problems if I switch away (such as the battle.net client not working), and I have never encountered any information that indicate improvements if you use other Windows versions, so I never saw the point in switching away.

EDIT: I just looked up what Windows versions does in Wine, and according to official Wine documentation, Windows version is ONLY used if a program queries for Windows version. This is mostly only used if a program want to know what features are available. A lot of programs don't even do this, but instead use other methods to detect available features on your system.

In other words, it may change how a program attempts to do something. But when it comes to game emulation, you will not see any difference by using a different windows version other than the default XP.

In my case only used in specific cases when app dont run without change default wine prefix: windows xp, like mortal kombat komplete edition works with windows 7 prefix, 3dmark99 works with windows ME prefix, silent hill 3 works with windows ME prefix, TDUdecGUI (program for decrypt/encrypt test drive unlimited 2 config files) works with windows 7 prefix and others

    :)

    I always use Windows 7
The reason is because I like the heirarchy changes they made to the directories.

    No more XP:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\username
    • C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data
    • C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data
    Windows 7:
    • C:\users\username\
    • C:\users\username\AppData\Local
    • C:\users\username\AppData\Roaming
Many game files and save games use these directories, so I have to mess with them from time to time. Most newer games use "Documents" or "Documents\My Games" or "My Documents\My Games" but some use those other folders.
