Hi people, I've been off the grid for a few days while my ISP investigated a serious connection problem on my fiber line.

For some reason, my connection started to intermittently drop, and it became so frequent that I was receiving 10 - 20 IP addresses each day, which made it practically impossible to do anything on the computer. I finally got a service call, and the techs couldn't find any problem in the house, including the fiber optic cable, so they went to the node. The node is about 100 meters away, behind my house under a cell tower.

When they said they were going to check the node, I went with them [because I was curious and had never seen the inside of one before]. It's a big steel container, maybe 2m x 3m. They unlocked the thing and one of the guys immediately said 'HOT'.

It's been 39 - 43C all month [102 - 109F, no lie, it has been blistering for the last 4 weeks].

Now I know that's an issue, just like it is with most of our electronics. This node is supposed to be air-conditioned, and the unit wasn't cooling. At all. It was running, but the compressor must have borked, and all the equipment inside was actually burning hot to the touch.

So hot in fact that the fiber endpoint my fiber cable was plugged into had burned out, and wasn't showing any signs of life at all.

They had to get the refrigeration guys to fix the aircon, and then they went into town to pick up a new endpoint to replace the burned-out one. God knows what else wasn't working in that node, there were all kinds of racks and routers and stuff in there.

So today I have service for the first time since Saturday morning [it's Wednesday afternoon now.]

Sounds just a bit like computer hell to me.

I'm curious about. here we can only air condition to 20 degrees below ambient

Which of course means that if it is 100 then the best you can do is 80 degrees.

So my question is how do you stand it?

Can you use refrigeration to get lower?
