Problem with installing the GPU (AMD)

Hello cummunity,

I got a AMD Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 and build it in.
Then I reinstalled Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa" Cinnamon 64bit, so I've got a fresh installation by now (well, I installed a few programs, but not much).

Now, I wanted to install the Card and Downloaded the driver from here:
https://www2.ati.com/drivers/legacy/amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13.1-legacy-linux-x86.x86_64.zip

But I always got multiple and different errors and honestly, I don't understand the wizard.
May some smart person help me out with this?

Did you try the driver manager first?
I know it doesn't provide the newest AMD driver, but it will provide a stable one (if there is such a thing from AMD).
Otherwise you will have to do a manual installation. I've tried this a few times in the past and always had a problem if something went wrong.
Normally you have to uninstall the current video driver an that means you are stuck with no GUI until the new one is installed. Then after installing the new driver, there is some configuration which can be a pain if not done correctly.

Hm, there ARE driver from AMD for manual installation. The driver manager don't provide anything.
At least in Leage of Legends the Card seems to work. Where can I check which driver is used right now?
Well, but battlenet doesn't find a grafics environment... so I really need anything

Configuration:
Operating System: Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa" Cinnamon 64bit
Cinnamon Version: 2.8.7
Kernel: 3.19.0-32-generic
Prozessor: AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Processor x 6
RAM: 8GB DDR3
GPU: AMD RV770 Radeon HD 4870

I tried to install the radeon driver in terminal and got a problem with dependencies where google don't wanted to help. The output is german but maybe it will help:

Code:
cronyk@cronyk ~ $ sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati

Die folgenden Informationen helfen Ihnen vielleicht, die Situation zu lösen:

E: Probleme können nicht korrigiert werden, Sie haben zurückgehaltene defekte Pakete.

If there is no proprietary driver available, then it means you are using the open-source driver. I've read many times that the open source driver is just-as-good or even better than the AMD driver.
So you might want to do some tests before attempting a manual installation.

Here is a "How-To" step-by-step:
PlayOnLinux

Just make sure to be careful because its easy to mess up and have no video at all
