Son the second bought a new game. He's played it for almost 80 hours already... so I figured I'd have a go.

First things first, grab an XBox controller, which works fine. I connected mine with a cable, which initiates a driver that doesn't support force feedback as yet. Over bluetooth it would apparently use an alternative driver which will support the necessary rumbles.

Second thing... it takes forever to download (151GiB), forever to set up (shaders) and forever to sort out all of its temporary files. It does this on Windows, too, so it's a game issue more than a Linux issue.

Next - it'll load, though in my case it gave me a warning about an out of date nvidia driver. I'm on 595.71.05 which is the latest stable driver in Gentoo: apparently the game wants 596.something. Anyway, ignored the error and proceeded.

After that, it was messing about with XBox logins - luckily I still have my old MS Authenticator and all that crap left over from a few years in planet redmond, so that was just a formality.

After that, the game. Here are some screens from the intro:

Anyway, I guess I need to play on low settings rather than medium initially, and turn off some overlays because, er, this...:

Anyway, will get there - watch this space...

Turning down the graphics to minimum got me a little further, but the game still locked up after a lap. Interestingly, neither the GPU nor CPU were particularly stressed, and plenty of memory was still available. I'll see if the 610-series drivers work with my now aged laptop, in case that improves matters any.

For anyone coming in from Google: Gentoo's default kernel and toolchain is not optimised for gaming - Mint / Ubuntu / SteamOS users will probably have an easier time.
