It wasn't all bad! If you were in a hurry you could run it down to the local post office and ask for special delivery. and nobody was making a living out of hacking snail mail... mostly.
I started out, at work, using a Hayes Smartmodem in 1987.
I certainly didn't have a modem at home at that time, because buying my own would have been about 2 months wages. Plus ideally you needed a second phone line, so that you could speak with the person you were sending a file to, because it was so unreliable that you needed to given them a blow by blow account of what was happening at your end.
