Valve announced that Half-Life 1 & Counter-Strike 1.6 Beta's are released: Steam Linux Announcements Here is a short articles on Geek.com: Valve Ports Half-Life to Linux
Half life has always run well under POL. The the news that Half-life 3 will be ported to Linux brings on no tears! ":O}
True, but wait until Half-Life 1 downloads and install all by its-self... no virtual drives, no wine, no hassle... just a few clicks. Dreamy I didn't see any news about Half-Life 3
Crysis 3 Beta You can get instructions to join the OPEN beta for PC, PS3. and Xbox. But I looked today at the PS3 beta and they just give you the chance to buy early...should update soon, the releases was Jan 29 for the BETA. Those with a PS3 might be interested to know that Crysis 1 is now available for PS# at 20 bucks.
Man! Am I pre occupied with Crysis or what!? I'm sorry Boo, I read Half-life 3 as Crysis 3 as they are spelled so similarly!
I was going to try Steam in Mint this morning and my internet was intermittent. Turns out my ISP was having problems. I'll try again in the morning. If Half-Life and Counter-Strike show up on my games list, then I'll download and give them a try
I finally tried out the original Half-Life in LInux for some reason it won't launch from Steam. So (of course) I used Terminal to navitate to the Half-Life folder: Code: /home/booman/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/half-life I'm not sure why its in common, probably because its not a source game. Anyways, once I navigated there I had to use Code: sudo chmod +x half-life.sh and Code: sudo chmod 777 half-life Then I ran it with Code: ./half-life.sh and everything worked perfectly! So I think it was a permissions issue after downloading the files, but I wonder why Steam didn't automatically adjust permissions like my other games? Now that I think about it, several of my games didn't launch at all, so I wonder if its the same problem? Maybe LinSteam needs a password prompt before installing
It doesn't seem like Steam is giving you a lot of help! I would have never been able to work my way though that to get a launch... millions could perhaps, but 10's of millions never would! Steam has to be easier than POL if it wants my interest to be hot and bankable":O}
We'll see, as people like us report bugs, they can fix it, but as I have always experienced with Linux downloads... you have to make them executable and give full permissions so you can install and run it. There has to be a way Steam can do it too.
I posted in the Steam discussion what I found. We'll see if anyone has that same problem. Have only installed 3 or 4 games so far and none of them have asked for credentials or permissions. Specially Serious Sam BFE! It just ran... no problems...
Me either, it was my first trial run.... I'm going to trial it some more, but its pretty standard FPS with hordes of monsters There isn't a whole lot of scripted events yet... a spaceship appeared in the sky and leveled a whole skyscraper (that was pretty cool) Othewise, I LOVE the environments so far! Beautiful textures and bump-mapping... the lighting is GREAT. The minions? Pretty uninspired
I might be able to give Sam a go..the price is OK...I'll think on it again when the guide comes out! ":O}
