Gentoo Desktop

Ran into a weird little issue with Webex on Gentoo, though I don't think it was a Gentoo problem, particularly.

I could participate in calls just fine, Mic and Speaker worked perfectly, but I wasn't getting any alert tones. Went and checked the 'Ringers and alerts' setting, and that was set correctly, but clicking on the 'Test' button produced no output, although the 'Output level' suggested that it at least THOUGHT it was playing something.

Investigation with 'pactl subscribe' showed that clicking on the 'Test' button for 'Ringers and alerts' did cause a new stream to be created.
Investigation with 'ldd /opt/Webex/bin/CiscoCollabHost' showed that all shared libs were being loaded.
Checking the 'Notification' settings in KDE didn't reveal any special notification configuration for Webex.
Finally, I checked the 'System Settings | Sound' control panel under the 'Playback Streams' and found that when the 'Test' button for 'Ringers and alerts' was clicked, a new stream appeared labeled "Webex: QtmPulseStream" followed by a bunch of digits, and that stream was MUTED!

What a ginormus PITA. I had to go hunt down a random audio stream that only briefly appeared and was muted by default?!?!

There's gotta be a better way to figure this crap out, but I've no idea what it might be.
