Skyrim is 5th series of the epic saga known as The Elder Scrolls. Famous for the first person shooter and open-world view, Skyrim continues the Role Playing genre retaining all the favorite aspects of Morrowind and Oblivion while introducing a bunch of new features.

    Rule of Thumb
High settings = More detail, lower frame rates
Low settings = Less detail, higher frame rates

    Conclusion:
Skyrim ran beautifully on my GeForce 550 Ti with everything set on High or Ultra. Wine 1.7.49-staging does a great job and I didn't have too many issue:
Tree animation was not smooth and the shadows moved irregularly
Can not see underwater (underwater view can be disabled in the .ini files)

Hi, I have a small problem and I'm not really sure if It's important enough to post it elsewhere. I am trying to install the game whole weekend, didn't know how to do a few things and that took most of my time. Anyway, I have SKYRIM_EN, but as a virtual drive(from iso,I did mount it), not on cd, and I can't get it to work. When I write cd /media/tea/SKYRIM_EN it says: bash: cd: /media/tea/SKYRIM_EN: no such file or directory. But when I write: /media/tea/SKYRIM_EN, without cd, it says: bash: /media/tea/SKYRIM_EN: Is a directory. I tried different ways but nothing works...

    What distro are you using?
Are you using the same version of Wine recommended in this guide?
Do you have 32-bit libraries installed?
  6. booman
If you are having problems installing Skyrim from DVD ROM, you might want to just download the entire game in Steam. It will take a lot longer, but should do the trick.
    Code:
    cd /media/tea/SYRIM_EN
is for navigating to the drive with Terminal. The path is /media/tea/SKYRIM_EN is what you want to use for mounting the DVD ROM in Wine configuration.

Hi again, sorry for bothering you again...
I managed to do that with the shell, my laptop was on suspend for a while and when I went to see, I tried the command you told, and it worked without any problem...but now...when I typed
    ./Setup.exe -no-dwrite
    it said 'permission denied'
And I again don't know what to do...
    (Really sorry for bothering you)
  8. booman
    try this:
    Code:
    sudo ./Setup.exe -no-dwrite
Then it should ask you for your password

You aren't bothering me at all, in fact I enjoy helping people. So post as much as you want, I always end up learning something new

Hi again, sorry for not replying for so long but I had school and tests so I didn't have time...
So, I tried the code you wrote, but when I typed it, it say fatal and something like 'script tried to use sudo'...I will put the screenshots so you can see...again, sorry for the trouble Screenshot from 2015-01-29 20:16:47.png Screenshot from 2015-01-29 20:16:57.png

Did it ask for your password? I guess this console doesn't support "sudo"
Are you able to download the entire game through Steam instead of installing from the DVD?

    Hi,

Do you happen to own skyrim through steam? I could explain how to install it through basic wine on a workable level and it is a rather generic set up. I use it on most if not all of my machines and I am well set no matter what.

PM and I'll give ya a hand :p
  12. allenskd
I just want to say... you don't use `sudo` to run games, it's not recommended and shouldn't be used to install/run games at all.

@Sky Blue: Could you create a new thread in the forums? it'll be easier to follow. :(

I think I had to use sudo in order to install the game. I don't remember why, but I was installing via DVD ROM.
The ideal solution is just download the entire game through Steam.
I just found it quicker to install the game via DVD ROM, but it requires a few more steps.
Cause its a pretty big download. Would probably take 8 hours on my internet connection.

Hi! I'm relatively new to Linux, my reason for switching to Ubuntu involves poor performance when using the Windows OS and its lack of security and such; so, I'm actually kinda testing it out and junk to compare the two systems. I've had Ubuntu for about two months and it's absolutely wonderful! I'm just not quite keen on coding so it's a bumpy process, to say the least. (I only say this to say that I'm a newbie so don't go hard on me guys ;o;)

ANYWAY I've been trying to get Steam and Steam games to work on Ubuntu recently and I've decided to look for help here, and so far I've been pleased with what I've gotten. All I need to know on this topic, though, is if I need to have Wine Steam installed before following these steps, and also how I would go about installing Skyrim without a disc. I've gotten to the "Installing Steam from DVD" step and I bought Skyrim through Steam so all I see in the window is "Please select the install file to run", a "Browse" button, and the word "Desktop".

If nobody's in the mood to help out, that's okay! I'll try other things, but all help is appreciated and thanks in advance!

UPDATE: I've just found out that I'm an idiot.

I decided to not be stupid and install Steam through the PlayOnLinux installation window, so far it is working as it would on my windows OS, if not better. Now to install Skyrim by this means! I've read that the install speeds are slow on Wine and PlayOnLinux, however my Steam is installing Skyrim at around 3.5 MB/S which is relatively high compared to the speed which it installed at on Vista. So far I feel really good about this method.

To booman - your manuals have been extremely useful and I would not have come about this solution without reading this thread first, I look forward to trying out all my CD games using this method! Thanks a bunch man!

*the only problem that occurred was an error stating that Steam crashed, even though it didn't.

    UPDATE 2: Everything works!

Skyrim ran flawlessly and on high settings at the same FPS as it was on low settings on the Vista OS. Steam was proving to show bad performance, but switching the Windows version to 7 fixed this for me.

Thanks again to booman and everyone on the thread!

    Welcome to the forum!
I'm glad the guide was helpful and you were able to get Skyrim running.
I'm also glad you were able to download the entire game. If the DVD install didn't work, then that is the next solution.

Most of your CD/DVD ROM games should run with similar steps.
Also, feel free to search for your game first and use the provided PlayOnLinux scripts to install your game. If it isn't available or the script doesn't work, then just do a manual installation as I do.

Skyrim Guide has been updated with the newest version of Wine 1.7.49-staging
I also removed the DVD installation and just downloaded directly through Steam.
    Much easier and painless
