I just installed P.C. Linux a new Destro I want to try out. It's mate based and installed my Nvidia card properly without even being asked...during install! Yikes! Video card functionality you can believe in! ":O} Just as the smile was starting to stick to my face I go to open my expansion hard drive and install my music and get shut down dragged about and abused as a trespasser without permission to open my own drive. I'm Admin! I'm creator! I checked! ":O} Is the a terminal command that enslaves and binds my extra drives to my will? Damn! This is really frustrating why would any destro think that I would want to be denied access to my own hardware by default?!! Or am I doing something wrong?
So are you guys going to just stand around and look while I'm getting my ass kicked by this? Really I'm being frustrated to death! Somebody give me a clue as to how I can get past this stupid security and access my drives...is it the way I'm installing it or what? Thanks...I do know you guys have much to do and get busy, so consider my approach a matter of style rather than impatience...yeh sure! LOL
My first guess would be that your permissions don't match with what was assigned to the drive. Can you show me a pic of the error you get?
Ok I had to set up my browser as all my favs are on a USB I CAN"T OPEN!@!!!!! ":O} Sorry had to search for the snap shot utility. After it warns me once it opens to a blank folder. Sorry snap shot wandered into the picture! ":O}
the drive must not have mounted correctly. try unplugging it and then plugging it back in. Linux should automatically mount it. is this a flash drive or a 2.5 in external drive?
This is any of my 2 90gb ssd drives, a 320 mechanical drive or my 64 GB USB thumb drive all of which work perfectly in any and all OS I've tried, about 6 or 9 OSs now including Mint Debain and Mint 15 and Fedora 19, Crunch Bang, pinguy and KDE. I haven't touched anything mostly because every thing is lock up! As soon as I reach the desktop, I'm locked out of my brand new system!!
Wow, this must be the most secure OS ever made. You can't get malware because you can't even access your own drives! You could always login at root and mount them... but at your own risk of course. I'll do some research on PC linux My spare drive in my Fedora server requires a password to mount. But its my password that mounts it. Then I can access it from Fedora or other computers.
HAL: Hal mounting devices Apparently Hal can be set to nomount drives connected to the computer. Or set to automount Not sure if this is the problem, but you can check it . Also, did you update PC Linux already? I read a forum post about not mounting USB drives and they did and update. It was fixed after that.
Usually if I'm denied they just ask for a password, a bit annoying but workable ( would like to know how to tell Debain not to ask for a password). But This SOB is sure I don't own the drives and doesn't offer to let me login. I don't know HAL how he works or where he lives. I think I've tried updating...Like Robbie I've reinstalled several times looking for a way in...
I am quite certain your system does not use HAL. It has been deprecated for some time now in Debian and most other major distros, so don't get confused by your research...if the posts you are reading about HAL are over a year old, they aren't applicable anymore. The HAL functions have been absorbed into udev, which is an entirely different kettle of fish.
Gotcha, thanks for the HAL information. I wasn't sure and havn't heard of it before, so I was thinking it was distro specific. Anyways, I would login as root and see if the problem still exists. If not, then its definitely a permissions problem. From there I would create a new Daniel user/group. Trial-n-error, trial-n-error
Have any of you seen this before? I mean I've reinstalled three times looking for a choice that I might make or might have made... didn't find one...who locks up a system like this? WHY?
I think I'm going to try disconnecting all my drives except the install drive,, seems counter intuitive to me but what the hell! LOL
