    Tomb Raider Anniversary is the re-make of the original Tomb Raider in a modern gaming engine. Experience the first adventure fighting against wolves, bears, dinosaurs and solve the mystery on an expedition Lara's father never finished.

    Follow my step-by-step guide on installing, configuring and optimizing Tomb Raider Anniversary in Linux with PlayOnLinux.

    Note: This guide applies to the Steam version of Tomb Raider Anniversary. Other versions may require additional steps.

    Tips & Specs:

    Try SteamPlay before using this guide as Valve now uses a fork of Wine called Proton and should run most Windows games.

    Mint 18.3 64-bit
    PlayOnLinux: 4.2.12
    Wine: 3.11

    Wine Installation

    Click Tools
    Select "Manage Wine Versions"

    Look for the Wine Version: 3.11
    Select it
    Click the arrow pointing to the right

    Click Next

    Downloading Wine

    Extracting

    Downloading Gecko

    Installed

    Wine 3.11 is installed and you can close this window

    Downloading Steam

    Go To: http://www.steampowered.com
    Click Install Steam

    Do not click "Install Steam Now"
    It will automatically install Linux Steam
    Select Windows Steam instead
    click "Windows" under the green button

    Navigate to your desktop
    Click Save

    PlayOnLinux Setup

    Launch PlayOnLinux
    Click Install

    Click "install a non-listed program"
    tombraideraniv05.png

    Click Next

    Select "Install a program in a new virtual drive"
    Click Next

    Name your virtual drive: tombraideranniversary
    No spaces
    Click Next

    Check all three options:
    • Use another version of Wine
    • Configure Wine
    • Install some libraries
    Click Next

    Select Wine 3.11
    Click Next

    Select "32 bits windows installation"
    Click Next

    Configure Wine

    Applications Tab
    Windows Version: Windows 7
    Click Apply

    Graphics Tab
    Check: Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows
    Click Ok

    PlayOnLinux Packages (Libraries, Components, DLL's)

    Check the following libraries:
    • POL_Install_corefonts
    • POL_Install_d3dx9
    • POL_Install_tahoma
    Click Next

    Note: All packages will automatically download and install

    Installing Steam

    Click Browse

    Navigate to your desktop
    Select: SteamSetup.exe
    Click Open

    Click Next

    Click Next

    Check: I accept the license...
    Click Next

    Click Next

    Click Next

    Click Install

    Click Finish

    Updating Steam

    Click the "X" to close Steam login

    PlayOnLinux Shortcut

    Select Steam.exe
    Click Next

    Name your shortcut: Tomb Raider Anniversary
    Click Next

    Select "I don't want to make another shortcut"
    Click Next

    PlayOnLinux Configure

    Back to PlayOnLinux
    Click Configure

    General Tab
    Wine Version: 3.11
    Arguments: -no-dwrite
    This fixes any missing font problems

    Note: Click the + to download other versions of Wine. Click the down-arrow to select other versions of wine

    Display Tab
    Video Memory Size: Select the size of Memory your video card/chip uses

    Close Configure

    Launching Steam

    Select Tomb Raider Anniversary
    Click Run

    Note: Click debug to see errors and bugs

    Click "Login to existing account"

    Find Tomb Raider Anniversary in your Steam Library
    Click Install

    Uncheck "Created desktop shortcut"
    Uncheck "Created start menu shortcut"
    Click Next

    Wait for the game to download

    Click Play

    Optmization

    Check "Tomb Raider: Anniversary Setup
    Click Play

    Adjust:
    • Resolution
    • Refresh Rate
    • Contrast
    • Brightness
    • Anti Aliasing
    • Fullscreen Effects
    • VSync
    • Shadows
    • Depth of Field
    • Reflections
    • Water Effects
    Click OK

    Check "Play Tomb Raider: Anniversary
    Click Play

    In Game Optmization

    Click Options

    Conclusion:
    Tomb Raider Anniversary ran perfectly on my GeForce GTX 1060. I played all the way up to the Tyrannasaurus Rex boss fight without issues. It actually looks quite beautiful for an older game. Should run on just about any hardware.

    Thank you very much, Booman! Loved the original, but I was perhaps too damaged when I killed the poor lass.

    This Anniversary is a re-make of the original Tomb Raider. Its much much better but you loose some of the nostalgia.

    It looks much better than the original. I think having a female main character in a game affects me too much when I hurt or kill her. What a wuss I must be? Naah, it's all just personal stuff that I shouldn't bring to a game.

    The original Tomb Raider 2 made it all too easy to kill her in the first chapter of the game. Didn't have any cheat codes for it, so I simply couldn't play it. Oh well.

    I honestly tried to play the original Tomb Raiders and found that manuvering Lara is waaaaaay too difficult. I had to run into the wall, turn her body, then jump and grab about 3 times before I actually latched onto a ledge. What a pain!
    I don't have the patience any more. This Anniversary edition fixes all of that and looks beautiful.
