    Follow my step-by-step guide on installing, configuring and optimizing Fallout: New Vegas in Linux with PlayOnLinux.

    Note: This guide applies to the Steam version of Fallout: New Vegas. Other versions may require additional steps.

    Tips & Specs:

    Try SteamPlay before using this guide as Valve now uses a fork of Wine called Proton and should run most Windows games.

    Mint 17.3 64-bit
    PlayOnLinux: 4.2.10
    Wine: 1.8-staging

    Wine Installation

    Note: Wine versions older than 2.0.2 and 2.12-staging no longer work with Steam.

    Click Tools
    Select "Manage Wine Versions"

    Look for the Wine Version: 1.8-staging
    Select it
    Click the arrow pointing to the right

    Click Next

    Downloading Wine

    Extracting

    Downloading Gecko

    Installed

    Wine 1.8-staging is installed and you can close this window

    Downloading Steam

    Go To: http://www.steampowered.com
    Click Install Steam

    Do not click "Install Steam Now"
    It will automatically install Linux Steam
    Select Windows Steam instead
    click "Windows" under the green button

    Navigate to your desktop
    Click Save

    PlayOnLinux Setup

    Launch PlayOnLinux
    Click Install

    Click "install a non-listed program"

    Click Next

    Select "Install a program in a new virtual drive"
    Click Next

    Name your virtual drive: falloutnewvegas
    No spaces
    Click Next

    Select all three options:
    • Use another version of Wine
    • Configure Wine
    • Install some libraries
    Click Next

    Select Wine 1.8-staging
    Click Next

    Select "32 bits windows installation"
    Click Next

    Configure Wine

    Applications Tab
    Windows Version: Windows 7
    Click Apply

    Graphics Tab
    Check: Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows
    Check: Emulate a virtual desktop
    Desktop size: Enter the size of your Linux Desktop
    Click Ok

    PlayOnLinux Packages (Libraries, Components, DLL's)

    Check the following libraries:
    • POL_Install_corefonts
    • POL_Install_d3dx9
    • POL_Install_tahoma
    Click Next

    Note: All packages will automatically download and install

    Installing Steam

    Click Browse

    Navigate to your desktop
    Select: SteamSetup.exe
    Click Open

    Click Next

    Check: I accept the license...
    Click Next

    Click Next

    Click Next

    Click Install

    Click Finish

    Updating Steam

    Click the "X" to close Steam login

    PlayOnLinux Shortcut

    Select Steam.exe
    Click Next

    Name your shortcut: Fallout: New Vegas
    Click Next

    Select "I don't want to make another shortcut"
    Click Next

    PlayOnLinux Configure

    Back to PlayOnLinux
    Click Configure

    General Tab
    Wine version: 1.8-staging

    Note: Click the + to download other versions of Wine. Click the down-arrow to select other versions of wine

    Display Tab
    Video Memory Size: Select the size of Memory your video card/chip uses

    Close Configure

    Launching Steam

    Select Fallout: New Vegas
    Click Run

    Note: Click debug to see errors and bugs.

    Click "Login to existing account"

    Login
    Check "Remember my password"

    Find Fallout: New Vegas in your Library
    Click Install

    Uncheck "Create Desktop shortcut"
    Uncheck "Crate start menu shortcut"
    Click Next

    Auto Detect

    Click Options

    Optimization

    Adjust:
    • Graphics Adapter
    • Aspect Ratio
    • Resolution
    • Antialiasing
    • Anisotropic Filtering
    • Detail Presets
    • Mode (Windowed, Vertical Sync)
    • Screen Effects (None, Bloom, HDR)

    Click Advanced
    Adjust:
    • Detail
    • Water
    • Shadows
    • View Distance
    • Distance LOD
    Click OK

    Rule of thumb:
    High Settings = More detail, lower frame rates
    Lower Settings = Less detail, higher frame rates

    Anti Crash Mod

    New Vegas Script Extender
    Go to: http://nvse.silverlock.org/
    Click Stable version 5.0b2
    http://nvse.silverlock.org/download/nvse_5_0_beta2.7z

    Navigate to your Desktop
    Click Save

    Extract the files to your Desktop
    Copy all the files to your Fallout New Vegas game folder:
    /home/username/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/falloutnewvegas/drive_c/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/Fallout New Vegas

    New Vegas Anti Crash

    Go to: http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/53635
    Click "DOWNLOAD (MANUAL)" at the top right
    A new download button will appear at the bottom
    Click "Download Manually" next to the Download button

    Navigate to your Desktop
    Click Save

    Extract the files to your Desktop
    Open the Folder "NVAC - New Vegas Anti Crash-53635-7-2-1-0"

    Open another window to "New Vegas Script Extender" folder
    /home/booman/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/falloutnewvegas/drive_c/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/Fallout New Vegas/src/nvse

    Create a new folder in the nvse directory: anticrash
    Copy all of the files from "NVAC - New Vegas Anti Crash" to the new anticrash folder

    PlayOnLinux Shortcut to Anti Crash EXE

    Back to PlayOnLinux
    Click Configure

    General Tab
    Click "Make a new shortcut from this virtual drive"

    Select "nvse_loader.exe"

    Name the shortcut: Fallout New Vegas nvse
    Click Next

    Select "I don't want to make another shortcut"
    Click Next

    Close Configure

    Select Fallout New Vegas nvse
    Click Run

    nvse_loader.exe should automatically launch Steam and the New Vegas Launcher

    Conclusion:
    At first Fallout New Vegas was crashing randomly. I was still able to progress because it saves every time I open a door to an interior or exterior level. After testing the Anti Crash mod I didn't experience very many crashes anymore. The performance was great on my GeForce 550 Ti. I didn't experience any frame stutters even with everything set to maximum.

    Thanks MrDeathJr!
    I really enjoy taking screenshots. I'm always learning stuff from www.deadendthrills.com but I don't go as far as modding the game for better higher quality screens. I try to keep everything vanilla unless its an older game with some really stable texture/asset mods to make it look modern. Like Quake, Quake II, Morrowind, Deus Ex, etc.

    By the way, I'm sure you noticed that Fallout New Vegas has no shadows just like Fallout 3. I've never understood it, but this is how the game was made. Its the same engine as Oblivion, but it HAS shadows. So not sure why its a problem in the Fallout games?

    In order to get this game to run proper. I had to add a windows native 32bit dsound.dll replacing the old one in system32, then add a dsound override in the libraries tap of wine config.

    Otherwise I had huge sound stuttering. So bad it was killing my fps. Especially when there was a ton of sounds going on at once I would get ~1fps.

    Note:
    This fix also worked for fallout 3 where I had the same problem. So I went ahead and did the same thing with skyrim. Same engine?

    This fix was mentioned on winehq by duozerk ( https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=21692 ) look for "Huge lags / audio stuttering issue"

    Note also:
    This fix caused scratchy sound on newer versions of wine like 1.8.2... But wine version 1.7.44 worked perfectly with the fix.

    That is very strange, I don't have any problems with scratchy/noisy/stuttering sound. I know there is a bug with in-game music crashing Fallout 3. So I would rename the music folder I think...
    Before Wine 1.7.55 Pulseaudio was not supported by Wine and some side-effects were stuttering/scratchy sound. We used to have work-arounds to fix it, but since Pulseaudio is now supported, I didn't have any issues in Skyrim, Oblivion or Fallout: New Vegas.

    Update: 42 hours into New Vegas and still running GREAT!
    Some days I will get one or two crashes and other days I'll play for an hour with no problems.

    I just bought and downloaded Fallout NV from steam and followed this tutorial. But I got a problem with NVSE. I already downloaded the latest and installed manually, and launch the game via nvse_loader, then I checked in-game with console command "GetNVSEVersion" but the result is not found. I dunno why, please help me.
    I'm using Ubuntu 16.04,PlayOnLinux with wine version 2.18-staging. thanks.

    I don't have the Special Edition of New Vegas, but I do have the Ultimate Edition on GOG. Wonder if I should give it a try?

    I've never used the console in New Vegas... so you are saying that the Special Edition content isn't loading into the base game?

    What version of PlayOnLinux are you using?

    I dont know what you mean with special edition. Sorry before I dont mention that I wanna install the mod Project Nevada. This mod need NVSE, so I installed the NVSE but it didnt work like I said before. So in this tutorial you installed the NVSE but you didnt show it's worked or nah with the console command ingame "GetNVSEVersion" .Would you check it?
    I use playonlinux 4.2.12.

    Oh, I thought you mean't Special Edition.
    I've never tried to install Mods in New Vegas. They "should" work because Skyrim and Oblivion mods work in Wine... but there is a chance that the Project Nevada has specific Windows dependencies to run.

    First, does New Vegas run in PlayOnLinux for you?

    Yes Fallout NV work fine vanilla and modded (mod without NVSE) . And NVSE not work, so plz would u try NVSE and check it in console ingame.thnx Booman :)

    Solved, NVSE worked. I change my wine version from 2.18-stagging to 2.22, and I faced another problem that was sound stuttering. so I followed the @infinity8x3 to solve this problem. thanks guys.

    Update: use stagging and non stagging make different in performance. I used stagging, the smooth performance but NVSE didnt work. I used non stagging, the low performance especially in combat but NVSE did well.

    Wow, that is the opposite of what usually happens. I've had games refuse to run with normal Wine, but run great with Staging versions.
