Hello Everybody: Today i installed Linux Mint 17.3 - Cinnamon - 64 bits on my netbook. After installation I followed this guide to have a nice clean stable system https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/mint-cinnamon-first But now I see that Update Mannager is recommending me to install lvl 5 updates. Im adding a screenshot for you to see. I understand lvl 5 updates can be dangerous updates and affect stability. what should I do???? Another thing that I would like to know is how to update/upgrade the kernel? Ubuntu does it automatically.-
I am not familiar with Mint. However, those two updates appear to be the kernel headers and the kernel firmware files. Both should be perfectly safe to update, especially since both are also very old versions. 3.13 has not been maintained by the kernel developers since mid 2014. I'm assuming Ubuntu devs are still maintaining their own version of that kernel since Mint still ships it. I would personally consider any and all Mint and Ubuntu updates to be fairly safe, since both distros are lagging behind on software releases. But you may want to take my opinion on this with some scepticism, since I use the testing repos in Arch, so I'm used to untested software. But like I said, I would not worry about those updates. In fact, if there is some way to use a newer kernel in Mint then I'd suggest giving it a try. Some googling seems to indicate that Mint's update manager has the feature to select between several kernel versions. 3.18 is an lts release that is still supported, so that might be a good choice. Any of the 4.x series of kernels should work well too. 4.1 and 4.4 are both LTS releases so they have extended support from the kernel developers.
oh Oki dokie Daeradin - Im going to accept those updates and use the manager to take care of the kernel thingy. Thanks again for your advice and tips.-
Your post got my curiosity going Lorena. I haven't really looked at these settings in a while. Yes! As Daerandin said we have choices! Mint offers quite a few choices as far as kernels goes. The list is scrollable and rather long! ":O} Found this under "View" > "Linux Kernels." As to how to choose.. I hope you understand these things better than I do! ":O} I for one am open to suggestions. I do have one bit of Mint experience to share... I have never gone wrong using anything Mint "Recommends." they seem very cautious in what they stamp done to. This for me is very good I mess things up on my own with any help from my Destros! ":O} P.S. sorry about the picture placement they were supposed to be side by side and my Medications won't let me change it now! LOL
I install every single update Mint gives me. I've never had a serious problem yet. I don't even pay attention to the rating for the updates. I install them all!
Do you have razor blades to go play in the streets with? LOL I guess someone had to put Mint security to the test. Am pleased but not surprised you've come to no harm doing so... ( Boo! What a gutsy bastard ya are!!":O}
Actually I have 4 Mint 17.3 64-bit systems and I update them all. I just want to game so I don't have time to research all the updates. If I see: samba nemo nvidia kernel devel Stuff like that is important to me, but at the same time, they are tested and secure updates due to being a few months behind Debian and Ubuntu. If one of them had a problem, then it would (hopefully) be fixed by the time it reaches us.
Updates like these are perfectly fine. If you think about it, who has the time to read up on all of these packages, libraries and services? Same with Windows... I would normally update everything except DOT Net Framework because its super slow.
GUYS!!!! I JUST ARRIVED FROM PICKING UP MY NEW HARDWARE!!!!! New motherboard - CPU - More ram memory and 2G Video Card DDR3 - My hubby promised me he is going to rebuild my compu next week end!!!!!!
I'd like to avoid mistakes or any confusion Boo. Looking at your pic, you and I don't seem to be on the same page. I install all 1 ,2,3level files and no others. My question is do you install 4,5 category files. Which as you can see from my pic are labeled by Mint as DANGEROUS. I wouldn't want us to mislead me now would we..or would I... ya see Boo you've already got me all upset! LOL
Honestly, my very first mindless selfish thought was... "Hey! I can do that for you now!" There's just something about new hardware, all those boxes to open, parts to inspect in uncomprehending awe. The feel of ram snapping into place... Oh! Remember! Once in, you can't really fondle, polish or admire a part as you will surly want to once it's wonders it begins to perform! "So if you can't be with the box your going to build love the parts your going to build it with!" That was was popular song a very while back...you could look it up! At least allow us to look over your very fortunate shoulders... Tell what parts, case etc. you and the architect of of your birthday fulfillment decided upon... {I'm old, (See my forums picture! That's me!!)... Ok... I had it touched up a bit...vanity never really dies.) I don't get all that much excitement as you can imagine....,(See my picture!) so when good things are happing...I like to stick my narly cooked nose into it! So like when the parts come out and start getting planted into all those neat little rows... oh wait that's gardening.. ... if you take any...can we pictures of your build? ( Oh God What have I done! I just know she's somewhere sadly sitting, sobered by my post thinking: "It's not to late. I can get out of here before anything bad happens... These are the kind of people who name their computers. No! These are the kind of people who give their computers first and last names!!s!!!) Have I said, Welcome to our forums Lorena? ":O}
Hey Dany Baby! My computer is like my life!!!! I spent almost 6 or 8 hours a day on it. And I dont know if your computer has a name but my desktop compu has a name (by the way its "La Nena").- My netbook name is "La Nenita" and my tablet is "Chiquita". Hahahahahaha - Completly crazy!!!!! PS: Going to get some pics of the parts I got and I promise I'll publish during the day. Cant wait until Sunday for it to be done!!!
Oh my god! She's another one of us!! My main boy is named "The Big Empty" my wife''s box was christened Da-Void" You will notice that both these names tend to somewhat diminishing. I find that slighting one's computer from time to time helps keep them in line! Do Not over do this! They will pout for weeks if they think you don't understand them.... And Except for Gizmo and ThunderRoad...Who does!! looking forward to your pictures. May I just add on a more personal and serious note. Your husbands devotion... A beautiful thing to see. That you so obviously treasure it, promises well for your future together. This makes me happy. Devotion and appreciation This can keep a lifetime of love fresh. This can bring you endless happiness. (Did you see my picture?) Imagine, she still loves me!! Loves that face! What is not possible to Devotion and appreciation?
I will stick with naming my children only. Funny though, they name all of their stuffed animals, so you would think I would name all of my computers and guitars....
So how do you get your computers attention? Just yell "Hey you"!!?? I can tell you this much Boo, Your computer has a name for you and you might not like it. (Talk about criminal negligence!) At lest give them numbers Boo!!! What about stickers from your parts suppliers!? You let your computer display them proudly...DON"T YOU!? Your not the geek I thought I knew today...I'll try back tomorrow! When you can tell us all what names you recently gave you machinery! ":O}
