Microsoft posted the source code for dotnetcore!!!!!

I've heard dotnet would be open source but many threads mention not having actual access to the code.
Maybe its really going to happen?

Exactly... its sad that our initial impressions are distrust, but that is the monster Microsoft built by trying to monopolize over everything they put their hands on

The current Microsoft leadership seems to really be trying to play nice, but I can't believe that the MS corporate culture has changed that much, that quickly.

My thinking is that MS is going to release the dotnetcore stuff, put out dribs and drabs of other .NET code to get people using it and dependent on it, then play their same old games, "You can use this feature only on Windows", and since 80% of the developer community will be using .NET by that point, they'll start writing windows-only apps again.

I really, REALLY hope I'm wrong, because Microsoft really have some nice development tools. MS could OWN the developer market for ALL platforms if they would just play nice.

This is what I'm thinking with Windows 10. So I'm not upgrading. My goal is to be all Linux in the next few years.

The only thing I do in Windows these days is stuff that is required by my work, and that is done in a VM provided by my company.

Truthfully, the only thing on that VM I can't really do properly in Linux is Sharepoint. MS seem to go out of their way to make sure that Sharepoint only functions properly in IE.

That, and I still haven't been able to get the Cisco VPN properly working with Linux.

I am running Mint 17.2 64-bit on my computer at work and only use windows in VM Ware because we have ancient proprietary software that I have to troubleshoot from time to time. And I use Outlook as well.
Everything else runs in Linux just fine.

Something interesting is, our Advertising software runs on Java 1.6 and uses ODBC connection to a Solaris Unix database server. Somehow I think this would even work in Linux.

I mean, they've used Java, ostensibly because it is 'write once, run anywhere'. And then they wrap it with a Windows-only installer.

That's like building a Ferrari and then putting go-kart engine on it. It just makes no sense.

Well they use something called Sybase to connect to the databases with Windows. They have a sybase and iODBC for Mac as well, but I can't seem to figure out how it connects. I bet it will run in Linux, I would have to do a lot of trial-n-error because I'm sure the vendor won't support Linux.

Sybase is the database engine; it's available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Unix IIRC. My company used to use it for our linux products until we switched to PostGRES. The trick is figuring out the ODBC connect string.

All of our proprietary software basically resides in a single folder. I can create a new thread about it. It would be cool to show my boss that Linux can handle our proprietary software
