Is Microsoft now supporting open source? Personally I don't trust Microsoft but if they really did finally begin to realize what the open source community has said for years - that open source is the futuer - then maybe they will do better in the future. I don't think so but anything is possible.

This might be better in the news forum but I can't post there yet.
 
I've heard dotnet would be open source but many threads mention not having actual access to the code.
Maybe its really going to happen?
 
Apparently they already ported to Free BSD. Its Micro$oft, due you really want to risk trusting them. Lets wait a while before risking embedding in wine or especially Xubuntu. I don't want to give them a chance to screw us over.
 
Exactly... its sad that our initial impressions are distrust, but that is the monster Microsoft built by trying to monopolize over everything they put their hands on
 
Its a similar story with Google. At least Google was smart enough to sneak in behind a bunch of android apps. Now they are everywhere, your cell phone, gmail,gdocs, ect...
 
The current Microsoft leadership seems to really be trying to play nice, but I can't believe that the MS corporate culture has changed that much, that quickly.

My thinking is that MS is going to release the dotnetcore stuff, put out dribs and drabs of other .NET code to get people using it and dependent on it, then play their same old games, "You can use this feature only on Windows", and since 80% of the developer community will be using .NET by that point, they'll start writing windows-only apps again.

I really, REALLY hope I'm wrong, because Microsoft really have some nice development tools. MS could OWN the developer market for ALL platforms if they would just play nice.
 
I don't believe micro$oft is playing nice. They are up something and I sure hope Mr. Tolvads and everyone else keeps a sharp eye out because those dishonest sneaky low life’s are probably up to something. Beware of Greeks bearing gifts and never judge a book by its cover and Beware of wolves in sheep’s clothing and all the rest of those old sayings.

This is what I'm thinking with Windows 10. So I'm not upgrading. My goal is to be all Linux in the next few years.
 
The only thing I do in Windows these days is stuff that is required by my work, and that is done in a VM provided by my company.

Truthfully, the only thing on that VM I can't really do properly in Linux is Sharepoint. MS seem to go out of their way to make sure that Sharepoint only functions properly in IE.

That, and I still haven't been able to get the Cisco VPN properly working with Linux.

I am running Mint 17.2 64-bit on my computer at work and only use windows in VM Ware because we have ancient proprietary software that I have to troubleshoot from time to time. And I use Outlook as well.
Everything else runs in Linux just fine.

Something interesting is, our Advertising software runs on Java 1.6 and uses ODBC connection to a Solaris Unix database server. Somehow I think this would even work in Linux.

The SOFTWARE is JAVA, but the INSTALLER is WINDOWS ONLY!

I cannot begin to explain the level of frustration that causes me.

I mean, they've used Java, ostensibly because it is 'write once, run anywhere'. And then they wrap it with a Windows-only installer.

That's like building a Ferrari and then putting go-kart engine on it. It just makes no sense.

Like how some icon themes and themes have installation instructions for repositories for ubuntu, fedora and opensuse but can't download a tar for the majority of linux distros.

Well they use something called Sybase to connect to the databases with Windows. They have a sybase and iODBC for Mac as well, but I can't seem to figure out how it connects. I bet it will run in Linux, I would have to do a lot of trial-n-error because I'm sure the vendor won't support Linux.

Sybase is the database engine; it's available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Unix IIRC. My company used to use it for our linux products until we switched to PostGRES. The trick is figuring out the ODBC connect string.

All of our proprietary software basically resides in a single folder. I can create a new thread about it. It would be cool to show my boss that Linux can handle our proprietary software

Yeah and if frogs had wings they wouldn't bump their asses so often...

When all you are and have was acquired though the use of power...How can I ever persuade you to renounce power.

What the modern world refuses to recognize is that Truth and Power are diametrically opposed.

In this life one seeks truth or power or seeks nothing at all.

MS will never give up power as a means to it's ends.
 
Very well stated Daniel~. M$ has already pushed me unwanted updates that eventually become Win10, truly unscrupulous "people." I should receive "Linux for Dummies" tomorrow, will purchase my new box for Linux only soon.
