Metro Last Light in Proton

Continue the story as Artyom during post apocalyptic Moscow in the underground Metro. Travel through miles of track visiting small communities of survivors and garrisons. The story unveils some twists impacting who is actually winning but I won't unveil that here... but the "dark one" plays a main part in Artyoms survival.

Game-play is almost identical to Metro 2033 with ride-a-longs and cutscenes. Most of the game is linear with some arena-ish areas that allow exploration. You are given the option to sneak or run-n-gun but stealth is much easier for survival since there are only save checkpoints. Specific bullets are uses as currency, but not ammo meant for your weapons. There are also numerous modifications you can use to make your weapons more efficient or quieter.

Sadly I bought Metro Last Light on GOG with did not provide a Linux version. However proton handles the game perfectly! I was able to play though without any major game-breaking...

Remember Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis???
Now that this game is impossible to aquire, you can play the next best thing:
Jurassic World Evolution

I was able to pick this up during a free Epic Games offer and load it up with Heroic Launcher!
Design and manage your dinosaur park by creating your own unique genetically modified dinosaurs! Customize fences, walls, giftshops, restauraunts and viewing stations! Send your scientists out on digs to find new bones and dino-DNA to research new types of genes. Create a magical world of roaming dinosaurs and tantilize your guests!

In Heroic Launcher I had no problems downloading the game and launching. Everything literally worked out-of-the-box with bundled proton!

Cloud Climber is a short first person puzzle narrative with hand drawn assets made in Unreal Engine. You play as the last worker making towers to reach the clouds as all water on the planet has faded away.

This is a very short project game where you can enjoy the ambiance in the infinite skies as far as the eye can see. I used Proton 5.0-9, DXVK and Media Foundation to run Cloud Climber and it ran perfectly. No graphical issues and no sound issues. My video card handled it well, just wish the game was longer and I was drawn into the story and beautiful towers.

Specs:
Mint 19.3 64-bit
GeForce GTX 1060
Nvidia 455
Proton 5.0-10
DXVK 1.7.2

Microsoft Edge for Linux?

Apparently Microsoft is going to port Chromium Edge to Linux. Who ever would have thought Microsoft would care enough to release a browser in Linux?

Windows Universal Platform

Danger! Danger! Microsoft is doing it again...

Have you heard of Universal Windows Platform?

It appears Microsoft is trying to create an API to develop apps that work on all Microsoft platforms:
  • PCs
  • Smartphones
  • Tablets
  • Game consoles
  • HoloLens
  • IoT devices
As you may have heard, Apple is working on their own ARM processor for their next generation computers. This means any applications made for x86 processors will not run.

Is Microsoft going follow Apple and eventually kill all x86 compatible applications as well?

Since WUP supports C++, C#, F#, JavaScript, and VB.NET to develop apps I'm going to imaging x86 compatibility is still supported for the unforeseeable future. But what happens when they decide to go full Windows-As-A-Service platform or only support ARM processes for their games?

From Reuters:
"Brave, a privacy-focused web browser set up by Silicon Valley engineering guru Brendan Eich, filed privacy complaints in Britain and Ireland that could become a test case against search company Google and other digital advertising firms.

The petitioners say they want to trigger an article in the new European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requiring an EU-wide investigation, making it a test case for a new European Data Protection Board created to give the privacy regime more teeth."

And ultimately, it's all the US government's fault. If they hadn't throttled my personal hero Phil Zimmermann and Co. in the '90's with the exportation of PGP, everyone would have freely been able to access the best possible encryption schemes.

There are some very controversial posts on GOG forum, Reddit Linux Gamers and GamingOnLinux about GOG's new password protection for their RAR data containers.

Is this DRM?
Does it break Wine & PlayOnLinux?
Who is it really protecting?
