Diablo Immortal in Proton

Blizzard finally created a free-to-play MMO for Diablo! Currently in Beta, join your friends and live the story between Diablo II and III. Choose a deadly male or female class:
  • Blood Knight
  • Barbarian
  • Crusader
  • Demon Hunter
  • Monk
  • Necromancer
  • Wizard

Battle all kinds of forest minions all the way to hell demons! Also expect the typical environments like Gothic graveyards, deserts and epic castles. Help other players and expect random encounters!

I was able to install Battle.net in PlayOnLinux with ProtonGE8 and run Diablo Immortal. Honestly it will require some patience because of the random crashing. I was unable to run the game on any other version of Proton. The game will consistently crash at start up, but don't give up, just use the System Monitor to kill DiabloImmortal.exe and then launch again. If that doesn't work, just kill all processes in PlayOnLinux and run it again.

For the most part, once it...

Path OF Exile in Proton

Path of Exile is a free-to-play action RPG with large maps, dungeons, tons of loot, bosses, skill tree and all kinds of upgrades! Pick your class, join up with friends and slay minions, mini-bosses in creepy super detailed worlds! This game is worth it! The monsters are very creepy and smart. They sometimes run away and find cover, other powered-up monsters are almost impossible to kill. Use your skill gems and load up and armor/damage to take them out!

Once again it was time to re-visit Path of Exile and play co-op with my family. Initially I tried through Steam but for some reason I was having all kinds of problems. So naturally I went to PlayOnLinux and used ProtonEXP and installed the client. No issues or performance problems these days and it is a lot of fun with my family!

Diablo II Resurrected

Blizzard recently released a complete graphical overhaul for Diablo II and I caught it during a sale!

https://us.shop.battle.net/en-us/product/diablo_ii_resurrected?p=168305

Everything in the game has been updated with new graphics and widescreen compatibility! Even online co-op is available!

Play the epic Diablo II with all the eyecandy you wanted and even press "G" to play with original 1990's graphics!

I was able to install Battle.net in PlayOnLinux but initially unable to run the Diablo II launcher. Darandin provided the solution for DirectX12 compatibility:

Download the 2.6 release vkd3d-proton-2.6.tar.zst:
https://github.com/HansKristian-Work/vkd3d-proton/releases/download/v2.6/vkd3d-proton-2.6.tar.zst

You can extract it, and then simply run the provided script to install the dx12 libraries automatically. You just need to ensure to set the path to the wine prefix for the game, and then simply run the script...

I never played the original Bloodborn on the Playstation, but this game reminds me of Dark Souls soooo much! The movement, the backgrounds and even the sound effects are just like Dark Souls!

Download Bloodborn PSX for free and customize the graphics to simulate a 1990's CRT television and enjoy the old school hack-n-slash!

I was unable to play this game on stable versions of Wine because of dependencies needed for Unreal Engine.
But I quickly found that staging versions are able to run it almost perfectly! There are some staticy sound artifacts which I tried to fix by installing xact and Direct X June 2010, but it didn't help. So I just dealt with it...

Necrovision Lost Company in PlayOnLinux

Necrovision is a WWII Military shooter franchise with a zombie-Wolfenstein feel. Lost Company is a prequel throwing you back into battle with a small platoon of soldiers who sometimes help you take out zombies and possessed Nazi. Except you are now a German soldier uniting Axis and Allied troops again the forces of evil.
New weapons, new levels, plane fights, weapon upgrades and much more.

https://www.gog.com/game/necrovision_lost_company

Lost Company was made in 2010 and runs perfectly in Wine on PlayOnLinux. I didn't have any issues installing, configuring or playing as you can see in the video. It is a bit dated when compared to more recent FPS, but still fun and intense!

Unfortunately the DirectX 10 features do not run in Wine, but there is a workaround to force DirectX 9

Unreal Tournament 3 in PlayOnLinux

Who doesn't like Unreal Tournament? This classic FPS series that laid the foundation for Sci-Fi action and vehicular battles! Hop in an alien Dark Walker or hover around on a hover-board...
All the classic game types are there:
  • Deathmatch
  • Team Deathmatch
  • Duel
  • Survival
  • Capture The Flag
  • Vehicle CTF
  • Warfare
  • Betrayal and Greed

Unfortunately a native Linux port was never completed. So we have to use Wine to enjoy all the classic Unreal mayhem. PlayOnLinux and Wine handle the game perfectly. I'm not even using DXVK and my GeForce GTX 1060, GTX 950 and 750 Ti handle it perfectly! Even on high settings!

Driver: Parallel Lines in PlayOnLinux

Driver: Parallel Lines is a GTA inspired roam-the-streets sandbox action game. Like the original Driver games, you will be driving the cities avoiding police and accomplishing tasks or missions. But like GTA, you can exit the vehicle and roam the city and steal whatever car you want. I love all the classic cars from the 1970s and character clothing styles. Even the city had a vintage look and ambiance to it.

https://www.gog.com/game/driver_parallel_lines

Driver runs fairly well in Wine, but there is a bit of stutter as it loads the distant city lines. I was able to use my Logitech MOMO racing steering wheel with force feedback. It handles nicely, but the buttons are a bit confusion to program in the game. Obviously this is not a simulation game, so I dealt with the settings and had fun roaming New York in the 1970s. Unfortunately there are only two camera modes... 3rd person and bumper view. Also, there is no support for...

Terminator Resistance in PlayOnLinux

Terminator Resistance is yet another chapter in the epic story of a post apocalyptic world ruled by robots. This time you join a resistance in a war torn world, looting, crafting, sneaking and cleverly taking down machines to survive. First impressions are comparing Rage and Fallout series as the game is fairly linear but full of story, NCPs and exploration.

https://www.gog.com/game/terminator_resistance

I've only played a few hours at this point, but it runs pretty well with all the settings on epic and 1920x1080 on my GeForce GTX 1060. There is a base I arrived at and it started to slow down considerably, but still playable. When going out to explore it runs perfectly. This is an Unreal Engine made game so it required vcrun 2019 and Media Foundation installed. I had to skip some of the intro scenes, but in-game cutscenes ran fine.

Silence is a point-n-click mystery adventure about a brother and sister surviving after a war raid. Feast your eyes on amazingly detailed environments and stunning visuals.

HOB is an action puzzle game developed by Runic Games who made Torchlight and Torchlight II.

Discover a magical world of ancient technology of epic scale. Use your robot arm to slay minions, toggle switches and light up the world of strange machinery. There is no dialog or story in this game, just find your way around the world to unlock new areas, upgrades and abilities.

Hob plays beautifully in PlayOnLinux with stable Wine. There are some stutters here and there probably related to loading the streaming areas of the game, but other than that it is full of exploration.

Diablo 3 Reaper Of Souls in PlayOnLinux

  • 3,908

Reaper of Souls was on sale recently so I picked up two copies hoping it will runs as well as Diablo 3...
It runs great!

I previously posted a Diablo 3 guide in PlayOnLinux which still works except now you can use Proton GE:
http://www.gamersonlinux.com/forum/threads/diablo-3-guide.1691/

Continue into Act V and then enable Adventure mode. Use your favorite character and crank the difficulty up to Torment... slay new minions, mini-bosses and new BOSSES! Fight through heaven once again and stop Malthael Angel of Death! Blizzard has out-done themselves again! The levels are more detailed, more interactive, enemies are clever and fun to kill! I can't wait to try Adventure mode.

As expected, Reaper of Souls runs really well with Proton. I did have to add the argument: -d3d11legacy
This allows Proton to handle the DirectX 10/11 compatibility. Battle.net also is running in Proton GE so we were able to play co-op without a...

Stranglehold in PlayOnLinux

If you are a fan of John Woo movies then you are a fan of Stranglehold! Inspired by games like Max Payne, this action FPS will satisfy all of your shooting and destruction needs. Plays as Tequila Yuen (Chow Yun-Fat) in a fast shooter where you can mow down all of the Chinese gangsters in Shanghai. Use bullet-time to slow down your enemies, sniper modes and shoot-offs with your dual pistols, shotgun and machine guns. What else could you possibly want?

https://www.gog.com/game/stranglehold

I was able to play Stranglehold in PlayOnLinux with Wine 6.0 64-bit. I didn't have any serious issues except one point during my recording where the keyboard stopped working... Not sure why, but it didn't happen again.
I was also able to add the widescreen and FOV mod found here:

This allowed me to use F5 to zoom out and F6 to zoom in. I had to install dinput8...

Blade Of Agony in PlayOnLinux

Blade Of Agony is a FPS WWII Doom 2 total conversion. Fight against the Nazi regime in a Call-of-Duty style of gameplay in this unique retro WWII themed levels. Upgrade your gear as you find gold and complete a wide variety of levels in this action campaign.

https://boa.realm667.com/

I was able to play Blade Of Agony in the Linux GZDoom using the command line to launch the game. Unfortunately the 2nd level was extremely slow to the point where it was unplayable. I did a bit of research and tried to made some adjustments in the game, but just couldn't play. So of course I gave-it-a-go in PlayOnLinux with Wine and it plays beautifully! The developers admit that there are some features not meant to run in GZDoom which may play a part in the performance loss with OpenGL.... so give it a try with Wine!

Stormrite in Proton

Stormrite is an in-development Open World RPG in a fantasy medieval world. Chose a class like archer, knight, assassin, mage and more... then weild realistic weapons and hack down your enemies. This public test version will put you in a small mountain arena where you can practice using the weapons, learn the physics and controls of the characters. The physics are pretty realistic like Chivalry, where each slice or arrow will contact their body and react accordingly. Its fun to watch how they recoil and swing realistically where you open yourself to danger if you are too offensive.

https://kerds78.itch.io/stormrite

Proton handles the demo fairly well in PlayOnLinux and I was able to play indefinitely by reloading the level every time my character died. I can't wait to see more locations and the "open world" the developers are advertising... but the weapons and realistic physics are top-notch and pretty fun. The demo is developed...

I was able to install and run the game with Wine 5.0.2 but upon launching there was no audio in-game. The BIK movies played audio, but not in-game. I still had to install DirectX June 2010 Redistribute for all of the xact, xaudio overrides. It would fail again and again until I manually added all the xaudio2_0 all the way up to xaudio 2_9 and set to (native). Then it installed and now audio works!

World War Z in PlayOnLinux

The zombie apocalypse has arrived and begun a whole new war! World War Z is a co-op third-person shooter very similar to Left4Dead series. Slay countless zombies in an objective based experience in New York, Moscow, Jerusalem, Tokyo and Marseille. With an arsenal of weapons you will try to escape linear levels with your friends (or bots) and survive massive hordes of zombies.

https://www.epicgames.com/store/en-US/product/world-war-z/home

World War Z is one of the rare games that actually works in PlayOnLinux with Epic Games Launcher. I had to do a bit of trial-n-error just to get the Launcher working by adding Media Foundation, Visual C++ 2019 and DXVK, but it actually works. The only issues I had playing this game is a bit of stutter at the begging of each level. I'm sure there is some caching going on there and its annoying, but if you are patient, it eventually begins to run well. I also had to crank down the settings as...

Grim Dawn is a huge epic action RPG with a very large linear maps. As if that wasn't big enough... the expansion Ashes of Malmouth and Forgotten Gods has more locations with more monsters to slay and more quests to complete.

Ashes of Malmouth
Forgotten Gods

Continue slaying minions, mini-bosses and epic boss battles and level up your additional skill trees and masteries to equip your character with new weapons and magical skills. The developers have added more factions to side with or eliminate and all kinds of epic environments to slay them in.
  • Burning sands

  • Volcanic wastes

Medal Of Honor is a military frontal assault first person shooter based on the battles in World War II. Play as U.S. Army Sergeant John Baker in the front lines of Operation Overlord, Battle of the Bulge and DDay. Warchest includes the original Allied Assault and both expansions:

  • Breakthrough
https://www.gog.com/game/medal_of_honor_allied_assault_war_chest

I never did a guide for Allied Assault because I was never able to run it in Wine until now. This game was developed in 2002 and though the graphics are hard on the eyes, its a pretty fun war game with a lot of action. It displays features and scenarios before its time. The Call of Duty series was inspired by Allied Assault.

The key to playing Allied Assault in Wine is adding the following command for Nvidia video cards:
export __GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700

In PlayOnLinux you have to paste this in the Miscellanous Tab area at the bottom...

In The Surge you awaken in the ruins of a huge corporation with an exoskeleton suite as your advantage. Fight rogue robots and augmented zombies as you learn what happened to the CREO corporation. This is a Dark Souls-ish combat game with the ability to target specific areas of the enemies unarmored body parts. Use combos and dodges to slay clever minions who have similar attacks as yourself.

https://www.gog.com/game/the_surge

PlayOnLinux was able to handle The Surge with Wine 5.0 64-bit and DXVK on my GeForce GTX 1060. Loading, saving and keyboard/mouse controls worked without issues as you can see in the video. I warn you, this game is pretty unforgiving as all the enemies re-spawn even when you return to a previous area. There are only checkpoints which save your progress, so you may find yourself dying an clearing out the same areas over and over.
