"Miss classic cRPGs like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment? So do we! Introducing Obsidian's PROJECT ETERNITY. Coming in 2014 for Windows PC, Macintosh OS X, and Linux Distribution via Steam and GOG (DRM-free)" http://eternity.obsidian.net/
Yet another one I wasn't able to help fund, but looks amazing! Are they claiming to create a Linux port? Yeah, those touch-screens are really cool... I never thought of using one of those for concept art
Yeah, that makes sense. Indie developers will usually take longer, specially if they didn't have much to show during the Kickstarter.
I missed the kickstarter backing for this, but they had still not closed the paypal backing when I heard of it, so I chipped in a decent amount for some nice goodies, which I am very much looking forward to. I have great hope for this game, and I am very happy that they decided to stick with the classic 2D view. In my opinion, it is what worked best for party based rpg that is not first person.
I'm starting to have Kickstarter fears after hearing about a few games that proposed certain features and after the funding changed their minds. What can you do after you have already given them your money? I have funded 3 different projects... 2 of which I think will be amazing games. Soul Saga Son of Nor Malevolence Now I hesitate to fund any projects because it seems like there is always a possibility of developers failing to stick with their proposal. I may still fund some in the future, but I'm going to watch them closely first. I really wanted to fund Armikrog (Neverhood developers) but I felt $999,000 was extremely high budget for a game. Apparently they spent even more on the making of Neverhood. Crazy how much it costs to animate clay.
I agree that you can never be truly safe. The only thing you know for sure with kickstarter is that you get your money back if the funding target is not reached. I have funded 3 projects on kickstarter, and all are made by people with a lot of experience in game development. I also would not have funded if I did not feel confident that they would make the game pretty much as advertised. However, I don't hold it against devs to make changes, as long as they stick to the core project goals. I've heard of malevolence before, I believe it was mentioned on a Might and Magic forum I sometimes lurk. The other two games I back are: Dreamfall Chapters - Norwegian devs behind The Longest Journey and Dreamfall, I am very much looking forward to this Hero-U - made by the Cole's that made the old Quest for Glory series, also set in the same world
Wow, Dreamfall Chapters got 1-n-half million? Thats amazing! Yeah Malevolence sounds like a cool game with infinite exploration, but so far the graphics are lacking. Its grid-based but I can't help comparing Skyrim and Oblivion to RPG's like this. They have huge shoes to fill and most of us are waiting for them to improve the shaders & shadows so the assets look nicer. Who knows if they ever will?
Only thing I have heard so far is Winter of 2014. And that is from their FAQ so I'm not sure how accurate it is.
Interesting, I haven't seen any advertising or post on typical game sites. So I guess it means more waiting.
I backed the game and I have the backer beta. It starts without problems on my WINE STEAM. Going to test the game itself now.
Yes please post screens. I even saw where they said it was ok to post stuff like that. They weren't worried about non-disclosure. On actual release you wont need WINE though since it'll have native Linux support.
