There are already a lot of Dungeons & Dragons games out there. From board games to card games and video games. The Lore of D&D is nothing new to most of us...
But I am excited to see Neverwinter appear as a Free game with the ability to use everything available in the game without having to spend a penny. The graphics are beautiful, the the world is huge, fight along side friends, customize your character and all the rest of the expected RPG qualities.

Note: When in-game, settings will automatically change on the screen

    Conclusion:
Neverwinter runs extremely well on my Geforce 550 Ti. I can turn almost all the graphical settings to high and still get a decent frame rate. This game is beautiful for an Online MMO and its best to play on a desktop with a modern graphics card.
Normally when I first Enter World, there is a bit of lag as the level loads.

Okay so I've loaded the Fglrx driver and rebooted it seems to have gone back to the long long wait on the second loading screen which is what I was stuck on when I was on Ubuntu but I waiting for 1hr 30mins and it didn't load at all so I switched to Mint.

Gonna give it at least a hour before I force close it.
  2. booman
You shouldn't have to wait an hour. For me it was 15 minutes or so... and that is with a slower internet connection.

Kill it and then in PlayOnLinux, select Neverwinter and click Debug instead of Start.
Go through logging in and everything, then when it sits at the "Cryptic" loading screen, check the debug window, copy and past it here.
  3. DJLC1231
its on the second load screen it just stops.

also this comes up as well

err:winediag:SECUR32_initNTLMSP ntlm_auth was not found or is outdated. Make sure that ntlm_auth >= 3.0.25 is in your path. Usually, you can find it in the winbind package of your distribution.

    That is the entire debug?
I'm leaning towards a driver problem. Sucks, but we have no control over what AMD supports and I have a feeling Linux isn't high on their priority list
  5. DJLC1231
OH I didn't know if you wanted me to paste the entire debug because its a lot of I thought it would count as spam.

Isn't there an update/upgrade or something to get it to work cause Tera works fine.
  6. booman
There is a way to update AMD drivers, but its a total pain. And, if you do it wrong, it could mess up the whole system. This is why I stick with Ubuntu's or Mint's recommended drivers.

Tera Online runs fine for you? Interesting. I wonder if it uses the same libraries (d3dx9, vcrun, etc) as Neverwinter. Those can make all the difference.

Yeah, go ahead and paste the entire debug. I'll just move it to the PlayOnLinux forum
  7. DJLC1231
I'm just gonna leave it Tera no longer works for some reason. Its just too much hassle trying to get one game to work without no issue and I'm gonna be getting Windows back in a fortnight, this is just way out of my comfort zone :l
  8. booman
Understood. It requires a level of patience, but it doesn't help when drivers just don't work.
If you decided to give Linux a try later on, build a desktop with a decent Nvidia video card and you won't have these problems.

Also, feel free to use Linux for simple tasks like internet, youtube, email, word, excel, etc.
Gaming is more complicated, but Linux is great at those simple tasks.
I setup Ubuntu 14.04 on my old Dell laptop and my wife/kids are doing just fine on it.

    Capture du 2014-07-03 10:28:15.png hi there ,
i always get this error after the "cryptic" screen loading , any idea of what the problem can be?
its the first time i try to instal a game on linux so i dont realy understand this error message ,(see sceeenshot attached)
    thanks
  10. booman
Sounds like a driver problem. Are you using the proprietary drivers for Linux? AMD, Nvidia or Intel?
  11. plazma
Mate or Cinnamon wich is better for gaming ?
  12. booman
I've read that Mate is lower CPU intensive, but you can really install any desktop manager you want.
I recommend Openbox. Its hard to use, but if you just want to launch a game, you log into Openbox, right-click, select Terminal and launch your game.

Openbox is kinda like a safe-mode desktop. No menu's, no button, nothing.
  13. Daerandin
Openbox is just a window manager, so you can launch any menus bars or the like if you wish, it just takes time to configure and set up instead of running a full desktop environment.
  14. booman
Oh, I though it was a desktop manager like cinnamon or unity. Nemo and Nautilus are windows managers right?
  15. Daerandin
Nemo and Nautilus are file managers. A lot of desktop environments use their own custom window managers. Xfce use Xfwm for window manager. If wikipedia is correct, then Linux Mint's default DE, Cinnamon, use Mutter as window manager, which is a fork of the GNOME 3 window manager. I believe Ubuntu's Unity use the Compiz window manager.

The window manager handles the actual windows, drawing of window decorations. It is what controls how you can position an application on your screen, move it around and make sure one application appears on top of another.
  16. booman
Wow, I still have a lot to learn about Linux. I had no idea there were differences.
So which desktop manager, windows manager is the fastest for gaming?
  17. Daerandin
Most modern computers are fast enough that it does not really make much of a difference. Lightweight Desktop Environments will take less system resources to run. Xfce and lxde are two common lightweight DE's. But running only a window manager, and whatever additional applications you'd like will always be faster than a full desktop environment.

I will simply link to my main source of information, if you are interested in further reading.

    Desktop environments on Arch wiki

    Window manager on Arch wiki
  18. booman
I'm sure they are all faster than Windows Explorer as well.
  19. Aryvandaar
I would stay away from advanced 3D effects in the desktop when playing games, unless you have a really powerful gaming PC.
  20. allenskd
Correct. My Google Chrome/Firefox hogs more memory than my full KDE environment which is amusing. I do think people need to turn off composition features because it makes an impact in gaming, sometimes it doesn't, but when it does and the person is new the experience could go south any time.
