    Does not serve kings....
It is not a political statement. It is a description of the Hermit sage who withdraws from public life to pursue his own higher spiritual aspersions.

Some 3 thousand years ago when this affirmation of the spiritual aspirations was written there were only peasants, kings and princes and influencing both from the shadows and the mists of time stands the Holy Sage who first set forth what was right and by doing so sought to rain in the ambitions of both king and peasant.

By living and thereby establishing higher social norms. This is what is meant by setting himself higher goals.
The Sage seeks out and tries to live in accordance with the Changes. The pattern of those changes is often refereed to as the Tao

The work of Tao is the mystery that all men live in ignorance before.
Because it is the Tao that organizes all things, nurtures all things
The mystery does does not leave us in darkness,
But rather establishes the rule by which all things come to be and pass away.

"Justice is foundation." Justice is the ruling and unifying principle of all that is in creation.
it governs both prey and predator. and ensures that each receives it's due.

But always present and modifying Justice with "hands smaller than the rain"
Flows mercy from the very heart of creation, To bless our passing into grace.

What we know will always be less that what we do not. our far past as dark to us as our distant future.
Yet Justice and mercy are known to us. We need but live to have their protection. We need but die to find their source.

    In my writings I always feel I am taking more than I give. I'm pretty sure that few if any benefit as much as I do from them. But your appreciation is always welcome. Thanks George! ":O}

Greater than all things that you know, Horatio. How does that quote go?[/quote]

    I can only paraphrase:

There are more things in the heavens and Earth
Dear Horatio than your philosophies have ever dreamed of."

    Just roughly...

Approximately what a useful (and honest) word. I approve.
