    Discover magical embers in the caves, ruins and dungeons below the town of Torchlight. Loot enemies, crates and chests to upgrade your arsenal and armor. Customize your character by leveling up, enchanting and utilizing these embers. Fight hordes of creatures and minions with your pet side-kick.

    Follow my step-by-step guide on installing, configuring and optimizing Torchlight in Linux with PlayOnLinux.

    Note: This guide applies to the GOG version of Torchlight. Other versions may require additional steps.

    Mint 17 64-bit
    PlayOnLinux: 4.2.9
    Wine: 1.6.2

    Wine Installation

    Click Tools
    Select "Manage Wine Versions"

    Look for the Wine Version: 1.6.2
    Note: Try using stable Wine 1.8 and 1.8-staging

    Select it
    Click the arrow pointing to the right

    Click Next

    Downloading Wine

    Extracting

    Downloading Gecko

    Installed

    Wine 1.6.2 is installed and you can close this window

    PlayOnLinux Setup

    Launch PlayOnLinux
    Click Install

    Click "Install a non-listed program"

    Click Next

    Select "install a program in a new virtual drive"
    Click Next

    Name your virtual drive: torchlight
    Click Next
    torchlight05.png

    Check all three options:
    • Use another version of Wine
    • Configure Wine
    • Install some libraries
    Click Next

    Select Wine 1.6.2
    Click Next

    Select "32 bits windows installation"
    Click Next

    Wine Configuration

    Applications Tab
    Windows version: Windows 7
    Click Apply

    Graphics Tab
    Check "Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows"
    Check "Emulate a virtual drive"
    Desktop Size: 1920x1080
    Click OK

    Note: Match the desktop size to the Linux desktop resolution for full screen

    PlayOnLinux Packages (Libraries, DLL's, Components)

    Check the following:
    • POL_Install_corefonts
    • POL_Install_d3dx9
    • POL_Install_tahoma
    • POL_Install_vcrun2008
    Click Next

    Note: All packages will automatically download and install

    Installing Torchlight

    Click Browse

    Select "setup_torchlight_2.0.0.12.exe"
    Click Open

    Click Next again

    Check "Yes, I have read and accept the EULA"
    Click Options
    Uncheck "Create desktop icons"
    Click Install

    When Torchlight is finished installing
    Click Exit

    PlayOnLinux Shortcut

    Select "Torchlight.exe"
    Click Next

    Name the shorcut: Torchlight
    Click Next

    Select "I don't want make another shortcut"
    Click Next

    PlayOnLinux Configure

    Back to PlayOnLinux
    Select Torchlight
    Click Configure

    General Tab
    Wine Version: 1.6.2

    Note: Click the + to download other versions of Wine. Click the down-arrow to select other versions of wine.

    Display Tab
    Video memory size: Enter the amount of Memory your video card/chip uses

    Close Configure

    Launching Torchlight

    Select Torchlight
    Click Run

    Note: Click Debug to see errors and bugs

    Optimization

    Click Settings

    Adust:
    • Fullscreen
    • Rimlights
    • Antialiasing
    • MW skinning
    • Rnder Behind Walls
    • VSync
    • Resolution
    • Shadows
    Click Apply

    Conclusion:
    Torchlight ran perfectly on my GeForce 550 ti and 7600 GT with everything on high. I was also able to run it on my Chromebook with Ubuntu 12.04 and an Intel HD 2000 video chip. In settings there is a nice "notebook" mode to help with performance. Obviously I wasn't able to run any the settings on high with the old Intel HD 2000 chip.
