Gun down varmits as the Marshal with your six-shooter, winston and shotgun. Hunt down the criminals who killed your wife and kidnapped your daughter.

Outlaws was a classic western shooter from the day it was released! Using the Jedi game engine, LucasArts purposely used 2D sprites in a 3D world to create a classic Doom-ish feel in a western setting. Even the cutscenes were animated in the style of their adventure games.



Follow my step-by-step guide on installing, configuring and optimizing Outlaws in Linux with PlayOnLinux.

Note: This guide applies to the GOG version of Outlaws. Other versions may require additional steps.

Mint 17.3 64-bit
PlayOnLinux: 4.2.10
Wine: 1.8.4

Wine Installation

Click Tools
Select "Manage Wine Versions"


Look for the Wine Version: 1.8.4
Select it
Click the arrow pointing to the right


Click Next

Installed


Wine 1.8.4 is installed and you can close this window

PlayOnLinux Setup

Launch PlayOnLinux
Click Install


Click "Install a non-listed program"


Click Next

Select "install a program in a new virtual drive"
Click Next


Name the virtual drive: outlaws
Click Next


Check all three options:

• Use another version of Wine
• Configure Wine
• Install some libraries

Click Next


Select Wine 1.8.4
Click Next


Select "32 bits windows installation"
Click Next


Wine Configuration

Applications Tab
Windows Version: Windows 7
Click Apply


Graphics Tab
Check "Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows"
Check "Emulate a virtual desktop"
Desktop size: 1024x768
Click OK


PlayOnLinux Packages (DLL's, Libraries, Components)

Check the following:

• POL_Install_corefonts
• POL_Install_d3dx9
• POL_Install_tahoma

Click Next


Note: All packages will automatically download and install

Click Browse

Select "setup_outlaws_2.1.0.11.exe"
Click Open


Click Next again...

Click Options
Check "Yes, I have read and accept EULA"
Uncheck "Create desktop icon"
Click Install


Errors
Click OK on all Errors. They do not affect the installation


Click Exit


PlayOnLinux Shortcut

Select "OUTLAWS.EXE"
Click Next


Name your shortcut: OUTLAWS
Click Next


Select "I don't want to make another shortcut"
Click Next


PlayOnLinux Configure

Back to PlayOnLinux
Select "OUTLAWS"
Click Configure


General Tab
Wine version: 1.8.4


Note: Click the + to download other versions of Wine. Click the down-arrow to select other versions of Wine

Display Tab
Video memory size: Enter the amount of memory your video card/chip uses


Close Configure

Launching OUTLAWS

Select OUTLAWS
Click Run


Note: Click debug to see errors and bugs

Click Video Mode


Select "Direct3D (HW Accelerated)
Select Available Mode to match your Linux Desktop
Click OK


Note: The highest resolution available was 1600x1200, so if you want fullscreen, you will need to set your Linux desktop as 1600x1200 before launching OUTLAWS.

Conclusion:
Outlaws ran perfectly in PlayOnLinux just as it did almost 30 years ago in Windows 98. This game is a total classic and is definitely worth playing. There might be a way to make it run in widescreen modes, but I didn't investigate these options.
