    Myst V: End Of Ages is the final episode of the Myst series. Follow the story of Yeisha as she is now grown up. What will happen to the ages in the final game in the series?

    Follow my step-by-step guide on installing, configuring and optimizing Myst V: End Of Ages in Linux with PlayOnLinux.

    Note: This guide applies to the GOG version of Myst V: End Of Ages. Other versions may require additional steps.

    Mint 17.3 64-bit
    PlayOnLinux: 4.2.10
    Wine: 1.8.2

    Wine Installation

    Click Tools
    Select "Manage Wine Versions"

    Look for the Wine Version: 1.8.2
    Select it
    Click the arrow pointing to the right

    Click Next

    Downloading Wine

    Extracting

    Downloading Gecko

    Installed

    Wine 1.8.2 is installed and you can close this window

    PlayOnLinux Setup

    Launch PlayOnLinux
    Click Install

    Click "Install non-listed program"

    Click Next

    Select "Install a program in a new virtual drive"
    Click Next

    Name the virtual drive: myst5
    Click Next

    Check all three options:
    • Use another version of Wine
    • Configure Wine
    • Install some libraries
    Click Next

    Select Wine 1.8.2
    Click Next

    Select "32 bits windows installation"
    Click Next

    Wine Configuration

    Applications Tab
    Windows Version: Windows 7
    Click Apply

    Graphics Tab
    Check "Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows"
    Check "Emulate a virtual drive"
    Desktop size: 1920x1080
    Click OK

    Installing Libraries (Components, DLL's, Libraries)

    Check all the Following:
    • POL_Install_corefonts
    • POL_Install_d3dx9
    • POL_Install_directmusic
    • POL_Install_dsound
    • POL_Install_tahoma
    Click Next

    Click Browse

    Select "setup_myst5_2.0.0.9.exe"
    Click Open

    Click Next again...

    Check "Yes, I have read and accept EULA"
    Click Options
    Uncheck "Create desktop icons"
    Click Install

    Click Exit

    PlayOnLinux Shortcut

    Select "eoa.exe"
    Click Next

    Name the shortcut: Myst 5
    Click Next

    Select "I don't want to make another shortcut"
    Click Next

    PlayOnLinux Configure

    Back to PlayOnLinux
    Select "Myst 5"
    Click Configure

    General Tab
    Wine version: 1.8.2

    Note: Click the + to download other versions of Wine. Click the down-arrow to select other versions of Wine.

    Display Tab
    Video memory size: Enter the amount of memory your video card/chip uses

    Close Configure

    Running Myst 5

    Select Myst 5
    Click Run

    Note: Click debug to see errors and bugs

    Optimization

    Click Options

    Adjust:
    • Video Resolution
    • Windowed
    • Shadows
    • Dynamic Relfections
    • Video Quality
    • Texture Quality
    • Antialiasing
    • Anisotropic Filtering
    Click OK

    Note: Uncheck "Recommended Only" under Video Resolution to select widescreen resolutions

    Rule of thumb:
    High settings = More detail, lower frame rates
    Low settings = Less detail, higher frame rates

    Conclusion:
    Myst 5 End Of Ages ran perfectly on my GeForce 9800 and my GeForce 550 Ti. Directmusic and dsound need to be installed in order to play the character dialog properly. Despite its age, this game is very high quality and still put a load on my video card.
