This was the first game in the Might and Magic series to break from the turn-based and grid-based movement system. The game world is quite large, and the dungeons are awesome. There is a real sense of exploration when you delve into some cavern or ancient castle. Many regard this game as the best in the series.

This guide will explain how to install the digital edition of the game, available on GOG.com

    Tips & Specs

To learn more about PlayOnLinux and Wine configuration, see the online manual: PlayOnLinux explained

    Arch Linux 64-bit
    PlayOnLinux 4.2.2
    Wine 1.7.6

    Downloading from GOG

GOG games can be downloaded on Linux by using a web browser, just make sure the "GOG.com Downloader mode" is OFF

    mm6_dl01.png

Or you can use the lgogdownloader, which is my personal preferred choice. It is a very useful program for downloading GOG games. There is no graphical interface for it, but it is very fast and provides error free downloads.

For some Linux distros it may be found in community repositories or similar community provided packages. Installation and usage instructions are located here: lgogdownloader

On first use, you must log in by opening a terminal and using the command:
    lgogdownloader --login

You will be prompted for your gog.com account email and password, which you must type in correctly before you can use lgogdownloader to download games.

To list all games you own, type:

    lgogdownloader --list

If you only want to see specific games you own, for example any games with 'might_and_magic' in the name, then type:
    lgogdownloader --list | grep might_and_magic

    mm6_dl02.png

To download Might and Magic 6 with no extras and no cover artwork, just the actual installer:

    lgogdownloader --download --game might_and_magic_6_limited_edition --no-extras --no-cover --directory /path/to/folder

    Setup PlayOnLinux

Launch PlayOnLinux and select 'Tools' and 'Manage Wine versions'

In the new window that appears, scroll through the 'Available Wine versions' box to find '1.7.6' and click on the right pointing arrow to install it, now it will be visible under 'Installed Wine versions' on the right side
If you have a 64-bits system, make sure you have selected the 'Wine versions (x86)' tab above

    mm6_01.png

Just close the window. Back at the main PlayOnLinux window, select 'Install'

Click on 'Install a non-listed program'

    mm6_02.png

Select 'Install a program in a new virtual drive' and click next

    mm6_03.png

Name the the virtual drive "MM6" and click next

    mm6_04.png

Select "Use another version of Wine", "Configure Wine" and "Install some libraries" before you click next

    mm6_05.png

On the wine selection window, select 1.7.6 and click next. Make sure you select '32-bits window installation' if you are on a 64-bit system.

    mm6_06.png

When the wine configuration window appear, select the 'Graphics' tab, and click the checkbox for the lower three options. You don't have to capture the mouse within the game window for this game since there is no mouse look. The resolution you set for the virtual desktop is also not very important as it will switch to the game resolution on start.

    mm6_07.png

Note: Even though the language is Norwegian in my screenshot, the layout will look the same for you

When you come to the selection of libraries to install, select: POL_Install_gdiplus
This will let the GOG installer display correctly

    mm6_08.png

    Then click 'Next'

When you are asked for the install file to run, navigate to the GOG installer and select it. Then click 'Next'

    mm6_09.png

    Installing the Game

Click on 'Options', and make sure to deselect the other Might and Magic games, and click to accept the UELA, then click 'Install'

    mm6_10.png

When the installation is complete, 'Exit' the installer

    mm6_11.png

When you are asked to create a shortcut, select "MM6.exe" and name it "Might and Magic 6 - The Mandate of Heaven", then select "I don't want to make another shortcut"

    mm6_12.png

    Patching the Game

This game really do need a fan patch which solves a lot of bugs, so go to GrayFace homepage

    mm6_13.png

Under GrayFace MM6 Patch click to download "Patch for english version of the game" since the GOG version is the english version. The patch is in a rar archive, but you can use P7zip to extract it, either through the graphical interface or by using the command "7z x MM6patch.rar" as long as you have navigated to the directory where the archive is located.

    mm6_14.png

Now in PlayOnLinux, have the game shortcut selected and click 'Configure', select the 'Miscellaneous' tab and click on 'Run a .exe file in this virtual drive', navigate to the extracted patch and select it.

    mm6_15.png

The patch should be able to automatically find the path to your Might and Magic 6 install, so all you have to do it keep clicking next until it is done. Be sure to have the checkmark on for adding the Smuggler's Guild to Free Haven as it really is only needed to uncheck it if you use mods.

    mm6_16.png

    Final steps

Now you should run the game once, this will populate the game's ini file properly. You may notice no music playing on the Main Menu when you start the game, so just close it.

Now right click on the game shortcut, and select 'Open the application's directory'

    mm6_17.png

You will now see the base game folder. Find the file 'MM6.ini', and open it with your preferred text editor, like Gedit or Mousepad. There are two things you need to change here.

    mm6_18.png

    AlwaysRun=0
I realize some people may want to have AlwaysRun enabled, but your characters will have a much longer reaction time with AlwaysRun enabled, so I really suggest you set it to '0' so reaction time is as it should be when you are standing still.

    PlayMP3=1
Since the patch was originally made for a CD version of the game, this must be set to '1' to enable music to play.

Now save the file and close it.

Lastly, to make music play with the Patch, you must create a new folder within the game folder, and name it 'music'

    mm6_19.png

Open the 'Sounds' folder. Here are all the game music, and game sounds. You have to move all the sound tracks from here into the new music folder you created. The only file you want to leave in the 'Sounds' folder is the 'Audio.snd' file.

    mm6_music.png

    Note on resolution

This game runs in 640x480 resolution, so obviously the game window will appear very small on most modern screens. You can try to go into wine configuration and disable the virtual desktop. However this might prevent the game from properly launching on some setups.

Certain distros have a default desktop environment that let you zoom in, so that is certainly an option. Another easy method is simply to reduce your desktop resolution when you play the game. Some window managers have the option to let a window take fullscreen status, meaning it will draw over everything else without window borders. If you window manager allows this you could set desktop resolution to 640x480, and then set the game window to fullscreen.

One of the greatest games of all time! Works perfectly, thank you very much!
Btw, which windowmanager do you use?
  2. Daerandin
I agree wholeheartedly, this game is awesome! Pretty much the whole series is awesome.

I use the Xfce desktop environment, and I just use the default window manager that comes with it, Xfwm.

I use a different theme now than what you see in the pictures It is a similar theme, just darker.

I also bought MM7 and MM8. I left out number 9 because it seems that it doesn't fit into the glorious series of the former ones.

Do you also use the standard xfce-terminal? It looks very nice ;)
I was forced to setup a new Arch installation this morning because of a bug with systemd and now I am looking for other nice themes. I am also using xfce. Best DE imho.

I love the MM series, even the first 5 games. And I agree that number 9 is nowhere near the quality of the other games. MM9 was not close to what they wanted to make, but the publisher forced a quick release as they were nearing bankruptcy. It is a shame because it could have been great if they had the time to do the game like they wanted.

Yep, I am using the standard xfce4-terminal. However, I do not use bash, I use zsh. Zsh can be bothersome to set up, but Arch actually have a basic config already available in official repos, it is called grml-zsh-config.

The only changes I have made to the terminal window is that I have the set background of the terminal to be slightly blue in color, and somewhat transparent. I don't remember what theme it was that I used in the screenshots. Currently I use the Plasma Bolt, Fire, Shock theme from xfce-look.org

Got so hooked by this game this morning so that I didn't recognize that it is almost half past two :)
This game is better than Skyrim imho. I lost my interest in most modern games due to the lack of atmosphere und originality.
Also this game looks better than a lot of modern rpgs because they use a lot of filters and bloom effects so that the gameworld looks like Barbie in fairyland. Gothic 2 was the last great rpg with a dark atmosphere and realistic graphics. Skyrim was, regarding the dark atmosphere, on a good way but will never come near to what Gothic 2 means for me.

Gothic 2, probably one of the best rpg's ever made if you ask me. Brilliant atmosphere, and the game world truly is exciting to explore.

I still hold MM6 as my all time favorite because I have so many fond memories of playing this game. Something that old games were really good at was the actual gameplay. I agree, the Might and Magic games look good. The graphics are distinct and give the game a unique character.

Stop saying that about Gothic 2! :p
I just turned down a GOG sale and could have gotten it for $3.00
I swear the next sale I'm going to pick it up!
  8. Daerandin
Sorry to say this, but you lost your chance to get it at GOG. That sale on GOG was all games that GOG had to stop selling. If you bought it in the sale it would have been available on your account, but now you can't get it anymore. At least not until GOG is able to work out a new deal with Nordic games, and I am not optimistic about that being soon.
  9. booman
Thats right! I totally forgot! Now I'm even more mad!!!
    Dang!
I just figured "I have 15 games to play already and I'll probably never get to it"
    My loss :(
Guess I'll have to get it on Steam or Amazon
  10. Marlhin
Well, that are bad news! Maybe I missed the news... Fortunately I have all the Nordic games I wanted to have.

@booman: I am sorry that you missed Gothic 2 at GoG but it is often on sale at Steam so you will be lucky there ;)
A good friend of mine got all titles there and he is happy about that!
  11. Daerandin
Yeah I know most of those games are on Steam as well, but I prefer to have GOG versions. No DRM is always my biggest priority. But there should not really be any difference between running these games from Steam.
  12. booman
I've heard DRM free games in Steam can be launched directly from the games .exe
    Never tried though.
