The Metro to rule them all!
Metro Exodus boasts many features not seen in the previous games but also keeps the "spirit" of post apocalyptic shooters like STALKER, Fallout, Mad Max & Rage 2. Huge detailed open areas and extremely smart enemies will put you in the middle of a simulation where each move makes a difference between life and death. Enemies are stimulated by sight & sound and will act accordingly. Explore large maps of Mother Russia's wasteland with all kinds of mutated animals, warring factions, hidden areas, safe houses and biomes. There isn't a single building or area that feels the same. You are truly exploring a detailed world with all kinds of loot, crafting, weapon mods and clever enemies. The amount of objects and locations littered around each map is staggering!
Stealth is definitely your friend, but when the push-comes-to-shove you can try an gun down your foes, but its not as easy as you would think. Enemies are constantly on the move once they know a threat is near. Take as many head-shots as you can because if they see a corpse or a feint light in the distance, you will have to duck-and-cover quickly to stay alive. One very important feature is auto-save, but you can only use it when enemies are unaware of your presence.
I truly love how realistic this world is! Many times I've said out loud "I've never seen that in a game before"! I'll try not to ruin any surprises, but you will be caught off-guard when an enemy sneaks up on you, or the floor breaks beneath your feet, or one choice determines which faction you support... on and on.
Sadly I was unable to run the native Linux version. I didn't get a specific error but the initial menu would not load properly. The music was playing and it displayed "loading profile" but never completed. I even let it run for 30 min with no success. So sadly I was forced to use Proton and it payed off. Proton can handle almost all the settings on high. I have an older video card, but the game is still beautiful with the settings I have configured and it runs great! Unfortunately an update to Mint or Proton has caused audio crackling. This is a common issue with Wine in the past and Pulseaudio but I have yet to troubleshoot it. The crackling mostly happens when the game is producing a lot of sounds all at once. So there may be a limit or memory leak with audio using Alsa/Pulseaudio and Proton. So strange because audio was perfect until this update.
