I could possibly take home an old Mac G5 A1186 from work
They are going to recycle them and I've always liked the old Mac's but never liked how heavy they are.
I definitely don't want to use OSX on it, but it does have an Intel Core2Duo processor

    Specs:
    Intel Core 2 Duo, 3.06GHz
    4GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5770 with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
    500GB Hard Drive

Would it be worth putting Linux on it?

It should run decently. That's more CPU than I had until I bought my current lappy, and it's only about a year old.

[edit]As a matter of fact, my son is running that old laptop now. Other than getting upgraded to 16 GBs of RAM, it's the same as when I was running it.[/edit].

So you think I can just pop a USB flash drive with Mint 17.3 Live Disk in it and boot to it?
Doesn't the Mac firmware cause issues with this?
What about gutting it and putting PC hardware in there?
