Battlefield Vietnam takes the franchise to the next level with vehicular warfare. Control the sky and the land in larger maps, 60's modern tanks, planes, helicoptors, and new character classes. Battle on either side in the Vienamese war among treacherous locations like Ho Chi Min trail, Hue, Quang Tri and many more.
Follow my step-by-step guide on installing, configuring and optimizing Battlefield Vietnam in Linux with PlayOnLinux.
Note: This guide applies to the retail version of Battlefield Vietnam. Other versions may require additional steps.

Mint 17.3 64-bit
PlayOnLinux: 4.2.10
Wine: 1.8.4
Wine Installation
Click Tools
Select "Manage Wine Versions"
Look for the Wine Version: 1.8.4
Select it
Click the arrow pointing to the right
Click Next
Downloading Wine
Extracting
Downloading Gecko
Installed
Wine 1.8.4 is installed and you can close this window
Copy Disks to folder
Create a new folder on your Desktop
Copy everything from the first Disk
Copy the .cab files from the rest of the Disks
PlayOnLinux Setup
Launch PlayOnLinux
Click Install
Click "Install a non-listed program"
Click Next
Select "Install a program in a new virtual drive"
Click Next
Name your virtual drive: battlefieldvietnam
Click Next
Check all three options:
- Use another version of Wine
- Configure Wine
- Install some libraries
Select Wine 1.8.4
Click Next
Select "32 bits windows installation"
Click Next
Wine Configuration
Applications Tab
Windows version: Windows 7
Click Apply
Graphics Tab
Check "Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows"
Click OK
Note: Virtual Desktop is also helpful when you have mouse or screen related issues.
PlayOnLinux Packages (DLL's, Components, Libraries)
Check the following:
- POL_Install_corefonts
- POL_Install_d3dx9
- POL_Install_tahoma
Note: All packages will automatically download and install
Installation
Select "Select another file"
Click Next
Click Browse
Navigate to the new folder on your Desktop
Select "Setup.exe"
Click Open
Click Next again
Click OK
Click Next
Check the the first two:
- Battlefield Vietnam Game
- PunkBuster for Battlefield Vietnam
Enter the KEY
Click Next
Check "No, install GameSpy Arcade later"
Click Next
Click Next again
Uncheck "View the readme file"
Uncheck "Create shortcut to..."
Click Finish
Click OK
Click "Register Later"
PlayOnLinux Shortcut
Select "bfvietnam.exe"
Click Next
Name your shortcut: Battlefield Vietnam
Click Next
Select "I don't want to make another shortcut"
Click Next
PlayOnLinux Configure
Select "Battlefield Vietnam"
Click Configure
General Tab
Wine version: 1.8.4
Note: Click the + to download other versions of Wine. Click the down-arrow to select other versions of Wine
Display Tab
Video memory size: Enter the amount of memory your video card/chip uses
Launching Battlefield Vietnam
The highest resolution Battlefield Vietnam can set is 1280x960
I reccomend setting your Linux Desktop to this resolution first.
Select "Battlefield Vietnam"
Click Run
Note: Click Debug to see errors and bugs
Optimization
Click options
Click Video
Select a preset
Adjust:
- Resolution
- Graphics Quality
- Geometry Quality
- Texture Quality
- Lightmaps
- Shadows
- Gamma Control
- Contrast
- Brightness
Note: You won't immediately see the result of the changes. They will happen when you load a map.
Conclusion:
Once I set my Desktop resolution to 1280x960 I was able to play the game fullscreen. The menu is 800x600 and can appear really small, but after loading a level everything looked great and ran great. I also didn't need to install any patches because I was using the Redux Retail versions. No Mods were tested.
