Avarice is an indie short horror game where you have to find the stolen mask in the haunted mansion. In the following events you will be terrorized by jump scares, irrie sounds and spooky corridors with interactive objects and a grim narrative. What happened here? Am I alone?



Follow my step-by-step guide on installing, configuring and optimizing Avarice in Linux with PlayOnLinux.

Note: This guide applies to the itch.io version of Avarice. Other versions may require additional steps.

Mint 19 64-bit
PlayOnLinux: 4.3.4
Wine: 4.0.2
DXVK: 1.4.6

Wine Installation

Click Tools
Select "Manage Wine Versions"



Look for the Wine Version: 4.0.2
Select it
Click the arrow pointing to the right



Click Next

Installed



Click (amd64) Tab
Select 4.0.2
Click the arrow pointing to the right



Downloading Wine 64-bit



Installed



Wine 4.0.2 32-bit and 64-bit is installed, you can close this window

Download Avarice
Go to: https://teamdarkmode.itch.io/avarice
Download the ZIP not the Setup
Save to your Desktop

PlayOnLinux Setup

Launch PlayOnLinux
Click Install



Click "Install a non-listed program"



Select "Install a program in a new virtual drive"
Click Next



Name the virtual drive: avarice
Click Next



Check all three options:

• Use another version of Wine
• Configure Wine
• Install some libraries

Click Next



Select Wine 4.0.2
Click Next



Select "64 bits windows installation"
Click Next



Wine Configuration

Applications Tab
Windows version: Windows 7
Click Apply



Libraries Tab
Type each of the following:

• d3d10
• d3d10_1
• d3dcore
• d3d11
• dxgi

Select one at a time
Click Edit
Change to "native (Windows)"
Click Apply



Graphics Tab
Check "Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows"
Click OK



PlayOnLinux Packages

Check the following:

• POL_Install_corefonts
• POL_Install_d3dx10
• POL_Install_d3dx11
• POL_Install_d3dx9
• POl_Install_tahoma

Click Next



Note: All packages should automatically download and install

Do not click Browse
We will extract the game instead
Click Cancel



Open Avarice.zip with your Archive Manager
Click Extract



Navigate to the new virtual drive to Program Files
Full Path

Code:

/home/username/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/avarice/drive_c/Program Files/

Click Extract



Click "Show the Files"



Download DXVK 1.4.6
Save to your Desktop

Extract to your Desktop

Open x64 folder
Copy the DLLs



Go back to the open game folder
Navigate to the Avarice Win64 directory
Full Path:

Code:

/home/username/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/avarice/drive_c/Program Files/Avarice/Binaries/Win64/

Paste the DLLs here



Back to PlayOnLinux
Click Configure



Select "avarice" on the left column
Click General Tab
Click "Make a new shortcut from this virtual drive"



Select "Avarice.exe"
Click Next



Name the shortcut: Avarice
Click Next



Select "I don't want to make another shortcut"
Click Next



Back to Configure
Select "Avarice" shortcut in left column

General Tab
Wine version: 4.0.2



Note: Click the + to download other versions of Wine. Click the down-arrow to select versions of Wine

Display Tab
Video memory size: Enter the amount of memory your video card/chip uses



Close Configure

Run Avarice

Select Avarice
Click Run



Note: Click debug to see errors and bugs

Conclusion:
Avarice ran perfectly in stable Wine 4.0.2 and DXVK. It is a short and small game, but the graphics, real-time lighting and physics are amazing! I could see this being a full blown game one day. My GeForce GTX 1060 handled the game without any issues. I didn't make a video because I don't want to give away the scares and the story. The only problems I had was extracting the game a second time would fail. Maybe the zip was corrupted? So I downloaded it again and it extracted just fine.
