Note: This guide applies to the GOG version of X-Wing vs TIE Fighter. Other versions may require additional steps.

PlayOnLinux: 4.3.3
Wine: 3.0.3
Wine Installation
Click Tools
Select "Manage Wine Versions"
Look for the Wine Version: 3.0.3
Select it
Click the arrow pointing to the right
Click Next
Downloading Wine
Extracting
Downloading Gecko
Installed
Wine 3.0.3 is installed and you can close this window
PlayOnLinux Setup
Launch PlayOnLinux
Click Install
Click "Install a non-listed program"
Select "Install a program in a new virtual drive"
Click Next
Name the virtual drive: xwingvstiefighter
Click Next
Check all three options:
Click Next
- Use another version of Wine
- Configure Wine
- Install some libraries
Select Wine 3.0.3
Click Next
Select "32 bits windows installation"
Click Next
Wine Configuration
Applications Tab
Windows version: Windows XP
Click Apply
Graphics Tab
Check "Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows"
Click OK
PlayOnLinux Packages (DLLs, Libraries, Components)
Check the following:
Click Next
- POL_Install_corefonts
- POL_Install_d3dx9
- POL_Install_tahoma
Note: All packages should automatically download and install
Click Browse
Select "setup_sw_xvt_2.0.0.5.exe"
Click Open
Click Next again...
Click Options
Check "Yes, I have read and accept EULA"
Uncheck "Create desktop icon"
Click Install
Click OK on all Errors
These do not affect the installation
Click Exit
PlayOnLinux Shortcut
Select "z_xvt_.exe"
Click Next
Name the shortcut: X-Wing vs TIE Fighter
Click Next
Select "I don't want to make another shortcut"
Click Next
PlayOnLinux Configure
Select "X-Wing vs TIE Fighter"
Click Configure
General Tab
Wine version: 3.0.3
Note: Click the + to download other versions of Wine. Click the down-arrow to select other versions of Wine
Display Tab
Video memory size: Enter the amount of memory your video card/chip uses
Close Configure
Select "X-Wing vs TIE Fighter"
Click Run
Note: Click debug to see errors and bugs
Conclusion:
X-Wing vs TIE Fighter ran perfectly first try in PlayOnLinux. Its a super old DOS game, so it will run great on any hardware. Remember to plug in your controller, or the game will not launch at all. I was able to play with my old Logitech USB flight joystick without any problems.
