I've been working on Space Marine for several days... I just can't get it to launch. Is a two disk DVD installation which, of course, has problems installing in PlayOnLinux. So I copied everything to a folder on the desktop. Even then, Steam has a problem installing the entire game, then once I launch Steam it still shows not installed (not highlighted) So I've posted my issues and errors and steps taken here on the PlayOnLinux forum: Space Marine Hopefully they will give me some tips There is a script provided by PlayOnLinux but its pretty old and doesn't work for me. This game looks really cool, we'll see what happens... If not now, maybe it will run later after some Wine updates Update: I finally got it working about 4 years later and Space Marine runs perfectly
I downloaded the demo from Steam. I ran it on my laptop in Windows 7, Wow this game looks good! I am thinking about getting the game. Any luck with it on Linux yet?
Nope, I couldn't even get it to launch because of DRM securom. I played the entire game in Windows... pretty fun. Kinda arcade-ish, but fun weapons and the jet-pack is really cool! I love the overall mood of the game. The way they talk, the Gothic environment... pretty cool stuff.
Any news here? It has almost been three years... I just tried it, via steam with Graphic drivers and dxfullsetup. I was not lucky... There is no hint HOW to install it but based on WineDB it works. Well, I think you know that because nearly everything is commented by a booman and I guess it's the same
According to the bug report on WineHQ, there is still no way to get the past the DRM. I would not rely too much on one report mentioning that it works when all other reports (including the bug report) indicate that it still can't be launched. I am also hoping for this to get fixed, because the game is awesome.
I'm afraid I haven't tested Space Marine in a long time. I don't know if GFWL was patched out or not. If it was, then I'm sure the game will run fine.
Space Marine does not use GFWL and never did. There is another type of DRM in the game which is causing issues.
Really? I thought it was... Whatever it is, I hope someone eventually removes it so we can play it in PlayOnLinux
An update on this game. I got it running on the latest wine version, but it crashes whenever I try to attack an enemy. There was also some graphical glitches, but they were fixed by disabling post-processing in the video options for the game. I had a look at the bugtracker on Winehq, and it it could be that the next staging version of wine may have a fix for this game. The git version of Wine staging supposedly already have the fix, but I have not tested it myself. I will make sure to report here as soon as a Wine version let you play this game.
AWESOME! Could you interact with the menus? I was just wondering if the stinking Steam overlay is still causing problems? Maybe xinput is required? Also try with and without the virtual desktop. That can make a difference with input as well. Otherwise, its something in the game...
I can interact with menus, I can move around in the game. I can even make attacks, but as soon as an attack damages an enemy it crashes. I did try with wine staging version 2.14 and it still had the same problem. I will try everything you suggested and see if it makes a difference.
If you can interact with menus and move your character, then its not the virtual desktop or xinput. Those are usually all or nothing until you install them. WineHQ's doesn't show any recent tests for Space Marine. What dependencies does it need? Check the vdf file... I may have to give this game a try as well. Path of Exile had a similar issue when using attacks but I think it was effects causing major frame lags. So I would have to use a patched version of Wine called 1.7.19-WGL_WINE_surface2
Dude it works for me! I was able to play just fine with everything on High. There are some graphical artifacts that look like specular or bump maps that are transparent. I could show you a screenshot I tried installing direct x 10 and some display settings but they didn't go away.
Disable post-processing in graphical options in the game. That fixed the graphical artifacts for me. Interestingly, I still get crashes whenever I damage an enemy, which make it unplayable for me. Most likely it is some required library that is pre-installed on Mint that I am missing. The debug information is not helpful. I may try this out on my wife's computer, she has Mint installed. If it works on her computer, then I will look through all installed packages and compare it with what I have installed.
Actually, it was Ambient Occlusion. Once I disabled that, it worked fine! I honestly don't know why your's is having problems crashing. I almost wonder if it is driver related? I'm just happy Space Marine finally runs in Wine!
I get the exact same crash on my wife's Mint computer. Just as with my computer, the game runs and I can play. But as soon as I damage an enemy with an attack, it crashes. I can safely make attacks, it is only when my attack damage an enemy that it crashes. I will definitely not give up on this, but I obviously require more testing. Great that it is working for you, that obviously means it can work.
What hardware is she using? Yeah, I'm uploading a video as we speak. I played for 25 minutes without any bugs or issues.
We are both on laptops with nvidia graphics. She's got 1060 I got 980, both using the nvidia driver. Apart from that, it is fairly similar hardware. Both of us have intel i7. It is odd that the crash only happens when damaging an enemy. EDIT: I do envy you being able to play it now. I have played it many years ago on a Windows computer, and I really enjoyed it.
Oh that is strange! So its not Mint, its not Nvidia, I wonder what it could be? I'm using Wine 2.12-staging and Nvidia 378 drivers. I installed the standard packages: corefonts d3dx9 tahoma vcrun2005 vcrun2008 Here is the video I uploaded this morning:
