Hello I have a problem with steam. After installing steam by following this tutorial I had no problems with it for the first week. I even installed other games and everything worked fine. But one day (I think after I installed xna for a game, or maybe updated to a different wine version) I got a window that said "The program steamwebhelper.exe has encountered a serious problem..." I tried reinstalling playonlinux and wine, nothing helped. At first I used wine 1.6.2 and POL 4.2.2. I tried updating to wine 1.7.47 and POL 4.2.8 that didn't fix it either. Here is the program error details I get: Code: Unhandled exception: page fault on execute access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code (0x00000000). I have been getting those errors about SteamWebHelper.exe as well I've searched online and even posted on the PlayOnLinux forums, but nobody seems to know I did notice that even though I get these errors, it doesn't affect Steam or my games. What I have read is that SteamWebHelper.exe is part of the advertising system in Steam. I thought it was fixed with Wine 1.7.47 but its not, I still get these errors.
I am also seeing this error, but it does not affect how games run. I can still play games without problem. So unless it is preventing you from playing the game, you can safely ignore this error.
Yes but at one point I was getting it on every click. I couldn't access anything from steam except the library. I will check how it is after another re-install. Do you guys use the default POL steam install (through the install programs) or with a downloaded steamsetup.exe ?
What version of Wine are you using? I was testing a Necrovision recently in Steam and I would get this error and the debug acted like Steam crashed, even thought it didn't crash. I have seen a few solutions but they are a pain. One is to find the SteamWebHelper.exe and rename it, but as soon as Steam updates, the file will be created again.
I always use the POL_Install_steam library for my Steam installs, all it does is fix the no text issue, while also installing the corefonts package along with Steam. Otherwise there is no difference from manually downloading Steam yourself and installing manually. Currently running with Wine version 1.7.47 let me install and play games. However, I have never actually tried using the Steam store in Wine. I always use native Linux Steam, or a access the Steam website in a web browser when I am browsing the store or community pages.
I don't use the Steam Store in Wine either. I mostly purchase games online: steampowered.com Then I go to my library and download the game. This error appeared recently and I have a post on PlayOnLinux.com with not responses yet. I thought I had a post, but can't find it
How do you guys install steam ? Through the steam in POL or with a downloaded .exe like the tutorials booman does ?
I always download from the website, but I've heard the Steam package works just as fine. It basically downloads from the website as well.
Alright guys I decided to live with it, but today I wanted to try some free to play games and I can't go to store and just download them there. I used 1.7.51 - got a crash. When I use 1.7.50 staging i don't get the crash message but I still can't open the store page.
Guys I have found a solution to my problem : Select your prefix and go to configure>wine>configure wine> and change compability mode to windows xp. That fixed it for me.
Good point! I never thought of that... I mostly add games via Steampowered.com or in Windows Steam I forgot that free games not-in-your-library have to be navigated to from the Steam store. Specially non native Linux games, hence why you are using Wine
In my case appears too but as Daerandin says dont affect in game (in games test no for now) However sometimes appears two steamwebhelper process and one of them shows gpu=composite disabled, this steamwebhelper process must be killed for performance
Just thought i'd post the solution for anyone annoyed like me. I know it doesn't affect games but that doesn't mean we should leaving it around.
Agreed! Thank you for researching this problem. No one else has provided a solution yet! I hope that Wine developers are working on it, because browsing, purchasing and downloading games is important in Steam
There is a long thread on Steam Community: SteamWebHelper.exe Crash So its even effecting Windows users Its definitely effecting Free-To-Play games because they don't provide you with a key. So you HAVE to add it through the Steam Store in order to play any of them. So now we can't add Free-To-Play games until its fixed
This sucks. I can't install neverwinter via steam because of it . Although it seems i need some more free HD space anyway.
I know, pretty lame, but you can still install neverwinter from the client download: http://download.perfectworld.com/nw/neverwinter_setup.exe You don't need Steam or Arc any longer. I still have a few Windows machines, so I can still add free games via Steam, but some games only appear on one Steam installation at a time. If I add a free-to-play game on one computer, it doesn't guarantee that the game will appear on another computer.
