Follow my step-by-step guide on installing, configuring and optimizing Prince of Persia Sands of Time in Linux with PlayOnLinux.
Note: This guide applies to the retail version of Prince of Persia Sands of Time. Other versions may require additional steps.

Mint 17.3 64-bit
PlayOnLinux: 4.2.10
Wine: 1.8.4
Wine Installation
Click Tools
Select "Manage Wine Versions"
Look for the Wine Version: 1.8.4
Select it
Click the arrow pointing to the right
Click Next
Downloading Wine
Extracting
Downloading Gecko
Installed
Wine 1.8.4 is installed and you can close this window
Copy CD ROM data
Due to problems with PlayOnLinux/Wine and mounting CD ROM's
Create a "Prince of Persia" folder on your desktop
Copy all the data from both of your disks to the new folder
PlayOnLinux Setup
Launch PlayOnLinux
Click Install
Click "Install a non-listed program"
Click Next
Select "Install a program in a new virtual drive"
Click Next
Name the virtual drive: princeofpersia
Click Next
Check all three options:
Click Next
- Use another version of Wine
- Configure Wine
- Install some libraries
Select Wine 1.8.4
Click Next
Select "32 bits windows installation"
Click Next
Wine Configuration
Applications Tab
Windows version: Windows 7
Click Apply
Graphics Tab
Check "Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows"
Click OK
PlayOnLinux Packages (Components, DLL's, Libraries)
Check the following:
Click Next
- POL_Install_corefonts
- POL_Install_d3dx9
- POL_Install_tahoma
Select "Select another file"
Click Next
Click Browse
Navigate to your Prince Of Persia installer
Select "setup.exe"
Click Open
Click Next
Select Language
Click Next
Click Next
Check "I accept the terms of the license agreement"
Click Next
Click Next again
Proceed with installation?
Click Yes
Installer will ask for Disk 2
Click Browse
Navigate to /media/username/POP_PLAY/autorun/Pop_GFX
Click OK
Note: Enter your login in place of "username"
Path should show D:/autorun/Pop_GFX
Click OK
Note: It's fine if there is another drive letter. ex: E: or F:
Check "I will install Acrobat Rader myself later"
Click Next
Check "Never register"
Click OK
Uncheck "View the Readme.txt File"
Uncheck "Launch the Prince of Persia The Sands of Time"
Click Finish
PlayOnLinux Shortcut
Select "PrinceOfPersia.EXE"
Click Next
Name the shortcut: Prince of Persia
Click Next
Select "I don't want to make another shortcut"
Click Next
PlayOnLinux Configure
Back to PlayOnLinux
Select "Prince Of Persia"
Click Configure
General Tab
Wine version: 1.8.4
Note: Click the + to download other versions of Wine. Click the down-arrow to select other versions of Wine
Display Tab
Video memory size: Enter the amount of memory your video card/chip uses
Close Configure
Prince Of Persia First Launch
Select Prince Of Persia
Click Run
Note: Click debug to see errors and bugs
Optimization
Click Options
Click Graphics
Adjust:
- Resolution
- Gamma
- Special Effects
- Shadow Effects
- Water Effects
- Fog
Fog Artifacts Fix
There is a problem with fog even in Windows
Navigate to the game Support folder
Path:
Open Hardware.iniCode:/home/username/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/princeofpersia/drive_c/Program Files/Prince of Persia Sands of Time/Support
Scroll down to the bottom
Change the following to:
ForceVSFog=1
InvertFogRange=0
ZEnableFix=0
Click Save
Right click Hardware.ini
Click Permissions Tab
Select "Read-only" for all permissions
Conclusion:
After fixing the fog problem, Prince of Persia Sands of Time ran beautifully. There are some strange camera movements to get used to, but otherwise performance is great and graphics look amazing "for its time".
