Been away too long again...My health has kept me from many of the things I love. Try to pull my online life together again. Have given up my office and now work from my bedroom, much less energy involved...yes it's come to that! ":O} In making the move I needed to give up my desk top monitor and switch over to using my LG 60" TV monitor at 1920X1080. as this does not quite fit my screen I use the underscan adjustment and everything looks and acts right. until I adjust (enlarge or make smaller) my fonts or reboot then it reverts to 1377X768. It SEEMS to save to Xfile, but wont keep my settings. LG says this is the preferred setting. One more thing I'm running my HD though my Denon Receiver, but as they tout its video pass thought to 4K HD I doubt this is causing the problem...but who knows! As always any help in steadying my settings will be appreciated! DANIEL!!! So great to hear from you! I've been wondering how you have been... Great to hear you are up-to-date with Mint 17.3 Hell I haven't even upgraded yet. As you can see we've been busy... 200+ step-by-step guides and still counting. Thanks to you of course! I would never have touched Linux gaming back in 2012 if it wasn't for you. Thank you! I'm not familiar with you setup... A Danon receiver HD with Linux Mint on it? That is interesting... What video card/chip is it using? Did Mint install a proprietary driver for you?
It has been a while! I have had my fair share of battles with computers and TVs, so I know the fun of overscan sadly. I'm assuming you're using HDMI from what you've posted. First up, I'd recommend you configure the TV not to overscan. For an LG TV, you need to go into the menu,select "Picture Mode", then select "Aspect ratio", and set that to "Just scan". This tells the TV to stop trying to be clever with the image and just display what it receives. Once that is configured, you shouldn't even need any settings in the Xconfig file. I'm not going to make any recommendations on that, as it has been a very long time since I've edited one - hopefully someone else can help out here. In theory, the Denon receiver shouldn't affect things, but it is actively involved in the HDMI signalling, as it is required to in order to make certain features of HDMI work. I'd doubt it would create this problem though.
I can only add what I told you in the other forum already - like Aedan said, xorg.conf is pretty much a thing of the past these days, but if you do have to edit it and save the edits with that nvidia-settings utility, you will have to run it as root. Are you doing that, or are you starting it as a normal user? As normal user, it saves only to ~/.nvidia-settings.rc (or something close to that) Which file did you post in your first post? Can you give us the path/filename? It seems to show the Denon entries, so it is saving something. It's important that we find out which file your system is looking at for its configuration.
Well hello booman! iI's great to feel well enough to be back among my my dear companions! It's been a rather ugly year for me. while my Doctors tried everything except Rabies vaccine to deal with my leg pain. I mean they were trying meds developed as anti-seizure meds, as "Some" people found it beneficial!! Example: It took a month to build up to my personal hell, then two weeks to come down off it. That was just one drug of many they tried. Why? because the US government won't let me have morphine unless I try all the new miracle drugs first!!!!! Morphinre is long out of patent, so drug companies don't make the killing on pricing that the new drugs bring in. So my Doctor HAS to try a dozen different totally crap drugs with a one in hundred chance of doing what we wanted to do!!. Finally we actually ran out of miracles and he was allowed to prescribe what I knew all along would work for me...having had Zoster A, K, A. "shingles" teaches one all there is to know about what works for oneself and what does not. I haven't felt this good all tear!!":O) Boomman: "I'm not familiar with you setup... A Danon receiver HD with Linux Mint on it? That is interesting... What video card/chip is it using?" I can tell your new to this! Booman":O} The Denon only passes though the HD signal in order to get "On screen display " and a hub for switching inputs from say my PS3 and my computer or Roku streamer. As to my contribution...it was one of the most enjoyable times of my life! I was learning (will no doubt have to relearn) something new everyday for you! I look forward to "riding the bullet" with you once again! ":O}
Ah Adan, It's been WAY to long! I've missed your wise console more than I can say! But far more I have missed the kind heart and gentle manner that guided me though so many of my adventures in computing! This won't surprise you: (I would have never thought to look at the LG monitor side of the equation!) but changing to "Just scan" in the LG settings looks to have leveled this in-surmountable mountain of a pain in my side. I can now switch fonts with impunity! ":O} I haven't tried a re-boot as I'm in the middle of a 36 gig music file conversion...Sometime tomorrow I try a re-boot, but I'm pretty sure you nailed A. Hearing from you has solve two problems! Nvidia now behaves and I'm lot less lonely! ":O}
What a good day this is for Dan Dan!":O Saving the file is a bit odd. I will "Sometimes" get a message saying that the con-fig file has to be restarted in order to save the settings in the resolution section. I simply try again and it excepts the save, when I "preview" the file, it "seems to except the changes. This is what the "basic" page and the "Advanced " page look like now that I've set the LG Monitor as Aedan suggested. P.S. Sorry I'm out of practice! Messed up my picture placement! Hey TR just look at us! All in the same thread as in the days of yore! ":O}
I messed up my uploaded files more than I thought. I'm used to that! ":O} Who can explain "Basic mosaic" to me?
I understand that thought! We have taught ourselves that if there's a problem, it must be at the computer end.It's just in this case, that's not true. I had enough pain with HDMI, TVs and overscan, but stubbornly refused to believe that there wasn't a way of resolving it. Once I discovered it, life with HDMI became much easier. Thank you - I'm glad to hear that the parts where we walked together have been useful!
I took the liberty of editing it for you. I think there is a box you can click that says "Insert as thumbnail", and will insert a smaller version of the picture that is clickable.
