So I've downloaded UT GOTY Edition from GOG.com and installed it, and it kinds SEEMS to work.

My problem is that it blanks my monitor screen when it launches, and then I don't get anything.

    Any thoughts?

Figured it out, I just had to configure Wine so that the game ran in a window instead of trying to take over my desktop.

Yes indeed, and if you sign up now, they give you several games for free right off the bat. I got UT GOTY for $5.

Of course it's an older game, but guess what? I set up my kids computer and my computer with it (that's right, you can run as many copies as you want, in your own household), and we had a freakin' BLAST!

For $5, that's darned good entertainment.

    Oh yeah! I love GOG!
Me and my 5 year old daughter play Sacred Gold all the time! Its a huge openworld RPG so there never seems to be an end.
Great fun and no DRM means lots of fun on my LAN
    Here are my GOG games:

In Linux? did you use PlayOnLinux?
Was there an existing script or did you have to do a manual install?

Yep, In Playonlinux and it has a script. I ran another instance in a manual install and got it to install in a hit and miss kind of way. Deleted it and went with the script version.
The next game I install I have got to take notes. I do this on the fly between work and kids.

Yeah, no problem... script or manual, it doesn't matter... whichever way gets the game to work, just use PrtScn for every step and I'll sort it out.
PrtScrn should save a full screenshot of the desktop in your Pictures folder.
Then just send me all the screenshots and I'll crop them and make a guide out of it.
Just make sure to get every step.
If you have to start over, just delete all of the images in your Pictures folder and start over

Something has broken, but I've no idea what. I can't get UT to run any more, it just crashes out.

Try selecting the game and clicking "Debug"
Errors are printed out for you to troubleshoot
Also, try installing from scratch again...
    I recommend a manual installation.
UT probably only needs these libraries
    • corefonts
    • d3dx9
    For OpenGL:
set "GameRenderDevice" to "D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice" in [installdir]/System/UnrealTournament.ini

PlayOnLinux configure/display tab/offscreen rendering mode: backbuffer

Looks like an unpatched retail version will crash Wine

Some other cool high quality textures available... read at WineHQ

Did this, nothing informative, basically the application crashed with an invalid memory access.

Did this, even went so far as ripping wine and POL out by the roots and reinstalling those as well, still no luck.

I'll give this a whirl when I have a little more time to screw with it. I'm beginning to suspect that I pulled down some updates that screwed me.

This is strange. I've done updates before and havn't seen any conflicts with PlayOnLinux and games.
Those old games are usually the easiest ones to run and the best frame rates.
So Wine shouldn't require much to run at all.

Ok, it's running again, kindof, after an update. I can launch it and play a game, but when I'm done, I have to do the windows reboot thing, and sometimes I have to do that three or four times before it works and I can play it again.

Strange... Which Unreal are you trying again?
I have all of them so I could give it a try also and report my findings.
Hopefully its not a 32-bit vs 64-bit problem

    Unreal GTUY, downloaded from GOG

I'm running wine 1.6 under POL, and I've just taken the defaults.

Oh man, I only have the original Retail version. That could make a difference too.
You searched PlayOnLinux for GOG.com Unreal Tournament correct?
