Dead Frontier MMORPG Guide

Dead Frontier is a Free-to-play action MMO RPG where survival is key. Survive solo, with friends or complete strangers in a city swarming with zombies around every corner. Enter homes, warehouses and explore endless city streets with a huge arsenal of weapons.

Follow my step-by-step guide on installing, configuring and optimizing Dead Frontier in Linux with PlayOnLinux.

Tips & Specs:

Mint 17 64-bit
Pipelight

Install Pipelight
Note: Pipelight is no longer in development, so this guide will not work with Pipelight

Go To: pipelight.net/cms/installation.html
Click on the distribution you are using

Launch Terminal
Ctrl+Alt+T

Ubuntu installation

Add the Repository
Type:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pipelight/stable

Press Enter

Update Ubuntu
Type:

sudo apt-get update

Press Enter

Install Pipelight Multi
Type:

sudo apt-get install --install-recommends pipelight-multi

Type:
"Y"

Press Enter

Update Plugins
Type:

sudo pipelight-plugin --update

Press Enter

Enable Unity3d
Type:

sudo pipelight-plugin --enable unity3d

Type:
"Y"

Press Enter

Create Mozilla Plugins
Type:

sudo pipelight-plugin --create-mozilla-plugins

Press Enter

Launching Firefox

Open Firefox
A pop up should appear "Creating wine prefix"

Unity pop-up should appear "Downloading wine-unity3d-installer (1MiB)"

Unity plugin
Check for the Unity plugin in Add-ons

Unity Player 5 should be on the list

If not, close Firefox, open Terminal again and run these three commands again:

sudo pipelight-plugin --update

sudo pipelight-plugin --enable unity3d

sudo pipelight-plugin --create-mozilla-plugins

Launch Firefox again and check Add-ons

Installing User Agent Overrider

Go To: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/user-agent-overrider/
Click "Add to Firefox"

Click Install

Platform Override

Type in the address bar:

about:config

Click "I'll be careful, I promise!"

Right-click anywhere in the rows
Roll over "New"
Select "String"

Name the string:

general.platform.override

Click OK

String Value: Win32
Click OK

Click the User Agent Override icon
Select "Windows / Firefox 29"

Launching Dead Frontier

Go to Deadfrontier.com

Allow Adobe Flash
Click "Continue Allowing"

Allow IcedTea-Web
Click "Allow and Remember"

Check "Allways trust content from this publisher"
Click Run

Click "Play Now"
Register and login

Update
Dead Frontier now has a Stand Alone version
For now click "Launch in Browser"

Note: If this "Install Now!" icon appears, then re-run those three update/enable commands again.
close Firefox and open again

Loading Unity screens

When Unity 3D Web Player works in Pipelight you should start here at the Outpost
Click Start

Conclusion:
Pipelight requires a few trial-n-error steps to ensure Unity Web Player installs properly. I tried to put all the steps in order, but you don't necessarily have to install it in this exact order.
Once Unity runs, Dead Frontier ran perfectly on my GeForce 550 Ti.
Loading times were quick, frame rates were perfect.
Don't forget, there is no fast travel back to the Outpost, but if you explore far away from it and log off, the game remembers where you were at next time you log in.

Please let me know if the order of this guide is not working. I tried several different ways to get Unity Player installed and it always required some repetitive steps, but eventually worked

 

I've tried every command multiple times as well as searching up different work arounds. Still haven't been able to play the game. I'm running Ubuntu 14.04.

 

Even switched over to Mint 17.2 and still nothing. Unity just won't show or work in Firefox.

 

Thanks for posting, I initially had a lot of problems as well because there was no clear identifier that everything installed correctly.
Do you see Unity Player in the Firefox plugins list?
Are you still getting the "Install Now" screen for Unity?

 

Yeah, it still shows the Install Now screen no matter what I do or how many times I run the commands, and no Unity Player won't show in my plugins. Everything else works fine to my knowledge until I get to that part.

 

That is really frustrating
I had similar problems and it took some trial-n-error and guesswork to finally get it running properly. Then I tried to document the steps in the best order possible. Apparently there is still some mystery or something changed...
What version of Firefox are you running?
I may have to try the guide again with new Firefox versions.
You did the about:config part as well right?

 

Yup. Fresh install of Mint 17.2 and everything is fully updated. Did the about:config and followed every other command, including trying what little bit I know. Absolutely nothing. Closest I got was Ubuntu/Wine with the standalone client, but it would bring the website up to connect to servers and then would get an error trying to switch back.

 

Dang! That really sucks.
I originally tried Dead Frontier in PlayOnLinux but the Windows Firefox was so slow the page wouldn't even load. This is why I looked into Pipelight
What version of Firefox are you using?
I will have to spend some time trying to install Pipelight again and see if there are any problems with updated versions of Firefox or Dead Frontier or Unity
I have Mint 17.2 at work, so I'll try it there.

 

I was able to get Dead Frontier to work at "work" on Mint 17.2
Unity plugin was available after the second time I ran the Terminal commands for Pipelight, just like in my Guide:

There was only two differences from my guide:

1. No Java Ice Tea pop up
2. Standalone or Web Browser Screen

Apparently now they have a StandAlone version of Dead Frontier:

You may want to try download it and set it up in PlayOnLinux.
I'll try it as well... maybe its easier to run?
Since they are using Unity 3D and have a Stand Alone version, maybe they will make a Linux native version because Unity 3D is compatible with Linux

 

I tried the Stand Alone version...
It installs just fine, but when it tries to contact the server it crashes and loads up a browser to their website.
I logged into the website with Chromium and then tried launching again with PlayOnLinux, but same thing.
Not sure what the problems is?

 

Yeah, I was getting the same problem with the Stand Alone version. As for the browser version, I was running Windows Firefox 29. Tried Chrome 34 as well and nothing. Everything is fully updated and I can't figure out what's stopping it all. I really want to play the game lol.

 

When I first did all of the Pipelight commands and did the Firefox override stuff, there was nothing for Unity in the Add-ons/Plugins area
So I closed Firefox and run the Pipelight commands again
When I went back to Firefox there it was!

So make sure Unity 3D Player is in the plugins area in Firefox.
Are you at least able to sign up and get to the main character screen?

Don't forget to "allow" Unity by clicking the lego brick in the top right

 

No matter how many times I do the commands, close Firefox, restart the pc, Unity won't pop up in Firefox. I made a character before and was on the main screen, but when I actually got into the "game" I guess is when it needed to switch over to Unity.

 

Tried for the 20th time and finally got it to work. idk what I did different, but I made sure not a single extra program was running more than just what I needed to run Mint. Got it to finally install Unity correctly, just Firefox is so damn slow loading up.
