Cult Of The Abyss is a horror survival game where you play a child surviving in a apocalyptic world. Gather resources, explore the wasteland, cuddle with your dog and avoid mutated creatures. Keep a close eye on your needs because death is around every aspect of the game.
Follow my step-by-step guide on installing, configuring and optimizing Cult Of The Abyss in Linux with PlayOnLinux.
Note: This guide applies to the Itch.io Alpha version of Cult Of The Abyss. Other versions may require additional steps.

Mint 19 64-bit
PlayOnLinux: 4.3.4
Wine: 4.15-staging
DXVK: 1.4.4
Wine Installation
Click Tools
Select "Manage Wine Versions"
Look for the Wine Version: 4.15-staging
Select it
Click the arrow pointing to the right
Click Next
Downloading Wine
Installed
Click (amd64) Tab
Select 4.15-staging
Click the arrow pointing to the right
Downloading Wine 64-bit
Installed
Wine 4.15-staging 32-bit and 64-bit is installed, you can close this window
Download Cult Of The Abyss on Itch.io
Go to: https://delphicmind.itch.io/cultoftheabyss
Save to your Desktop
PlayOnLinux Setup
Launch PlayOnLinux
Click Install
Click "Install a non-listed program"
Select "Install a program in a new virtual drive"
Click Next
Name the virtual drive: cultoftheabyss
Click Next
Check all three options:
Click Next
- Use another version of Wine
- Configure Wine
- Install some libraries
Select Wine: 4.15-staging
Click Next
Select "64 bits windows installation"
Click Next
Wine Configuration
Applications Tab
Windows version: Windows 7
Libraries Tab
Type the following:
Select one at a time
- d3d10
- d3d10_1
- d3d10core
- d3d11
- dxgi
Click Edit
Change to "native (Windows)"
Click Apply
Graphics Tab
Check "Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows"
Click OK
PlayOnLinux Packages (DLLs, Libraries, Components)
Check the following:
Click Next
- POL_Install_corefonts
- POL_Install_d3dx10
- POL_Install_d3dx11
- POL_Install_d3dx9
Note: All packages should automatically download and install
Do not click Browse
Cult Of The Abyss Alpha does not have an installer
Click Cancel
Open CultOfTheAbyss_win.zip with your archive manager
Click Extract
Navigate to the virtual drive
Full Path:Click Extract againCode:/home/username/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/cultoftheabyss/drive_c/Program Files/
Click "Show the Files"
Installing DXVK
Download DXVK 1.4.4
Go to: https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/releases/tag/v1.4.4
Save to your Desktop
Extract
Copy all of the DLLs in x64 folder
Paste in the open folder where you installed the game
Full Path:Code:/home/username/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/cultoftheabyss/drive_c/Program Files/CultOfTheAbyss_win
PlayOnLinux Configure
Back to PlayOnLinux
Click Configure
Creating a Shortcut
General Tab
Select "cutloftheabyss" on the left column
Click "Make a ne shortcut from this virtual drive"
Select "CutlOfTheAbyss.exe"
Click Next
Name the shortcut: Cult Of The Abyss
Click Next
Select "I don't want to make another shortcut"
Click Next
Back to Configure
Select the new shortcut in the left column
General Tab
Wine version: 4.15-staging
Note: Click the + to download other versions of Wine. Click the down-arrow to select other versions of Wine.
Display Tab
Video Memory size: Select the amount of memory your video card/chip uses
Close Configure
Run Cult Of The Abyss
Select Cult Of The Abyss
Click Run
Note: Click debug to see bugs and errors
Conclusion:
The only problem I experienced was the character moving erratically when trying to interact with objects. For example he may just start walking off in the wrong direction, but you can correct him by simply clicking again. There are some graphical artifacts around the edge of the screen, but its hard to tell if its actually part of the game or a Wine artifact? Either way, it doesn't affect gameplay. I was able to get a great frame rate with my GeForce GTX 1060 and was able to save, quit and load the game later on.
