I have an old machine that I built a bunch of years ago. A year or so ago I installed Linux Mint 14 on it and then forgot about it. Today, I gave it to my 8 year old son. He loves it! He may be the youngest Linux user in the area.
I installed Linux Mint 16 XFCE today as I thought it might run faster. So far so good. It has: P4 Pentium 2.6 Asus P4P800-E Deluxe Motherboard. Nvidia with 512mb memory Seagate Barracuda 120gb 2gb ram DDR400 Creative Sound Blaster LiteOn DVD Burner 2 other Optical Drives Custom case with window Floppy Drive I need my glasses on and stronger light to detail this old build. I can't remember ha! I think the machine or parts of it is older than my son. I may get a P4 3.4 for it. Also this Seagate has always been kind of slow so I may get something else.
Nice old machine! With Linux you'll never have to get rid of those old computers. I still have some DDR sticks lying around Is the Nvidia onboard graphics or a dedicated card? Just curious, because I can recommend a few games.
The Nvidia is a card. He wants to play a game called Roblox. I would like to get it running in linux. http://www.roblox.com/Landing/Animated
Some good and bad reports at winehq http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=15961
Did you have a chance to try out Roblox? Don't get discouraged by WineHQs, there are many games on there reporting as Garbage and Bronze but run just fine. Its because Some people don't report their success and Wine moderators don't allow patched versions of wine or PlayOnLinux to be posted as test results.
No luck yet. I worked on it a little. It is hard to keep him off the machine long enough to work on it, Ha!
So he is playing Roblox now? I have to admit, I still havn't played Minecraft. Probably never will. I've only heard good things though...
All his friends love Roblox, Minecraft, Ninjago. He has a friend in Roblox that lives outside of the US. He says his friend talks funny. And this is from typing. Kind of gives you an idea of how the young relate these days and that is through tech.
Thats pretty cool. My oldest is 6 years old and I finally got her to do Google chat with me while I'm at work. It helps her learn the keyboard, spelling and grammar. But she gets bored pretty easily.
This might be a clue or help for Roblox. I hope to get to it soon. http://www.roblox.com/groups/group.aspx?gid=292611
Looks like they have tested RoBlox in Wine 1.7 But they didn't describe any necessary libraries... Like d3dx9, dotnet, vcrun, etc.
Yup, but at least they are talking about it. Maybe there is more info on the site. Kind of tough digging around in their forums.
