I got Risk II installed but it will freeze during the first, second or third battle and I would need to press Alt+F4 to close the game and fix my resolution. I tried using wine 2.14-staging, 2.20, 4.0.1 and 4.10 but I still get the same result.

Seems this sometimes happens in Windows as well -
Make sure your compatibility settings are for WinXP, and maybe reinstall into a completely new Wine profile to ensure there are no conflicts/temporary files with other games. I can't imagine drivers being a problem for DX6-era games, but worth a look.

Those old games are harder to troubleshoot because they should "just work"
Make sure you are using the newest version of PlayOnLinux 4.3.4

Also, even thought it is a DirectX 6 game, you might want to install Direct X 9 package just to be safe.

If it still crashes, run the game with "debug" instead of "Run"
Then post the errors you get

This is my POL log file for Risk II. I created a new POL drive just for Risk II and I did try changing it to "Windows XP" in the Wine Config but still no luck :(

Sorry I took to so long to read your log.
The only significant error I saw was the X error:
XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0

Not totally sure what this means, but it seems X windows doesn't like the game running on the screen available. Could be the resolution of the game verses the resolution of the Desktop...
Try using the "virtual desktop" in Wine Configuration. That make contain the game in the proper resolution.
Other than that, make sure you have 32-bit libraries installed in Linux and make sure you are using 32-bit virtual drive with 32-bit Wine.

Was this installed from the original CD, or from a GoG digital download? That unhandled page fault looks suspiciously like Wine is struggling with antique copy-protection.

I have the CD version however I was unable to install it using wine and it will not install even on newer versions of Windows due to the DRM. What I had to do was setup Windows XP in virtualbox and install the game within the Windows XP Virtual Machine and then I took the Risk II directory and compressed it to a 7z file and then extracted that fine into the Wine Prefix.

I also extracted the 7z file into a fresh Windows 10 install and the game worked fine except I needed to enable direct play within my control panel settings. On Windows 10 the game does not freeze during a battle.

Did you install DirectPlay in Wine as well?
